Its simply that 4x4s block my vision more than 'normal' cars, and I hate not being able to see well ahead (so I have back off to see around them, which can often lead to another vehicle pulling into the too small space between me and the 4x4). you don't like 4x4s because they don't allow you to tai...

/me stands up and prepares to take abuse. Sometimes I think I'd like to ban the purchase of 4x4s and similar large vehicles by people who don't need them. I accept that this is unfair, impossible to implement/police and extremely unlikely to happen. I also accept that some people have a real need or...

On the subject of plates, is it me or are there masses of cars with suspiciously 'grimy' patches over key numbers/letters on their plate? Some seem particularly neatly 'grimed'. I think this is normally a result of people not washing the plates rather than deliberately making them dirty. I suppose ...

As it happens I came across a news story about this very subject today, at http://computerworld.com/mobiletopics/mobile/story/0,10801,108871,00.html In summary an insurance company study found that when used incorrectly satnav can be more distracting than using a paper map at the wheel. Unfortunatel...

I use sat nav on my PDA for all long journeys, and any where I haven't been to my destiniation before. I even use it for my long commutes to the office (just under 100 miles each way). It is set into a cradle to the drivers right where it doesn obstruct either vision or access to the controls, but c...

I'd always thought it was to give your eyes time to adapt to the brighter lighting in the centre of the tunnel when driving at night, though this doesn't explain why there isn't a similar orange-lit stretch at the end of the tunnel to give your eyes a similar chance to adjust back to the lower ligh...

When going through the Hatfield tunnel on the A1, northbound on my way home the other day I noticed that the lighting in it seems a little odd. For the first hundred metres or so the lights are very orange, after which it switches to a more 'normal' white light through to the end of the tunnel. Pers...

And made worse by lack of attention, which means that by the time people realise that there's something going on up ahead they have little option but to brake hard. On the drive home today I had the misfortune to see this in action only a few feet from my car. As usual, the M25 was being a bit stop...

Thinking it through, you are of course absolutely right. Having 30 repeaters everywhere would cost a fortune and would add even more clutter than is already there. In some situations I'd argue that they wouldn't be irrelevant though. I can think of a couple of 30mph roads which don't 'look' like the...

I've got the 150bhp Seat Leon TDI (same engine as the ibiza samcro mentioned) and can vouch for the fact it is quick. The ibiza would obviously be quicker as it is lighter than my leon and I think the engine is slightly more tuned. Once chipped it would be approx. 190bhp+ and a quite a bit of fun to...

My name is Gareth, and I'm a car driver and I've never been caught speeding. I've been reading the safespeed site on and off for the past few years, after finding it from Paul's posts on pistonheads. Almost two years ago I got a new job that meant instead of driving around 100 miles a week it was su...
