As the small '50' sign is the first one going into Bournemouth from the national speed limit, Surely the sign at the changeover point, has to be much larger than a repeater sign and , I believe, on a yellow background now, to be legally enforceable? Maybe Claire can confirm or deny this one for you...

Dougman -I've used this bit for years . possibly familiarity bred contempt over the new limit ,and I didn't notice it .What caught my eye was the dark patches on the light poles where the repeaters used to be . That made me wonder ( and drop to 30) till I'd passed the new 40 limit. Strangely enough...

Naughty naughty! From TSM Ch 3: " 14.33 Direction 11(4)(a) does not permit a 30 mph speed limit to have repeater signs where a road has carriageway lighting (see para 14.21). Any adjacent length of road which is also lit and subject to a different speed limit, including the national l...

Diagrams 674 and 675 only need to be reflectorised. Solved one point -thanks . What about the visibility aspect ,wrt the proximity of the bus stop and height of the limit sign ? From TSM Chapter 3: "SITING 1.15 It is essential that drivers have an unobstructed view of traffic signs. The distan...

Yes absolutely 20 can be enforced, it sits in a red roundel with black lettering and white background and fits the right size and lighting if lit then yes. A policeman could stop you for 21 mph if they so wished. It would be unusual but possible. Last I read they were looking to add powers of traff...

It's nice to see that highways engineers are still an arrogant breed, who couldn't possibly admit to doing anything wrong, as they must be second only to God. And County Highway officials come a close second. Possibly in more counties than mine. Last round of speed limit reductions in Warks, some C...

Thanks folks, next question , if the lights are switched off, there must be some provision for any entry sign into the restriction to be lit. The signs only need to be lit if the street lighting is lit, otherwise, the signs only need to be reflectorised. So in this case, once the street lighting is...

I get easily confused between sign face types. But a recent scheme shows using internally illuminated Gantry signs? What is the best sign face category for this. :?: i always get confused between the use of Microprismatic and retroreflective? Anyone help please! :D :D I'm guessing that an internall...

I still think a pair of gates functioning as a 'lock' would be more appropriate. If you are let through the first you then can't get out until it has closed behind you. Until the boss orders a limo to pick up an important customer or something. If you were making a system like that you'd need to ba...

I see that Mclaren have released their new modification for Singapore, apparently it's been banned by the FIA so expect to see Ferrari using it! Not sure what the warning's for, there's nothing rude in it,

"The significance of the signs and markings used at mini-roundabouts is now specified in item 5 of the table in regulation 16 rather than in the caption beneath diagram 611.1 in Schedule 2. Because the previous requirement couldn’t be met by large vehicles, the wor... |

And even though the lights seem to be stuck on red, they might have been switched to all red to allow a works vehicle in or our, or for a bit of plant to encroach on the carriageway. Though probably doesn't apply at 3 in the morning (or during tea break :) ) though Or there may be a signalised thir...

I don't know if Dougman might comment on this ... I have now found a Mini-roundabout (MR) with different "Give Way" systems on different entrances. This is at a T-junction and the traffic entering the MR from the left on the main road has a proper Give Way sign and the double dashed lines...

I'll ignore your ad hominem comments and point out that the mini-roundabout I mentioned above has the blue circular arrow signs positioned right at the give way lines. There is no advanced warning of the roundabout layout. This is why I think signing is poor. Isn't that how they are all [meant to b...

With motorway matrix signs the easiest thing to look for is any red light. If there's a red light it's mandatory, if there isn't it's not. I can't think of any exceptions to that off-hand. A red X and/or red 'bouncing balls' are mandatory, as are red-ringed (with white numbers) speed restriction si...

After our recent discussions on mini-roundabouts I have done a bit of observation on a couple of these in my local area. Both are at T-junctions. In both locations, EVERYONE performing a right turn (from either direction) passed over the painted "island". Not a single person avoided it. T...
