As fuel costs rise, many more are going to be driving to cost. MANY vehicles are now limited to 70 max, or lower. I know of one company whose fleet of diesel focuses has been fitted with same,as are many vans and ALL trucks are 56 max. I find that faster is not quicker, if that makes sense. In fact...

£1.50/ltr. My speed is going to be 56 max on every road I can legally do that. AND that includes m/ways. That would make sense only to those who place comparably little value on the time spent behind the wheel. That's not for everyone. Besides, no-one (who is reasonable) is forcing anyone to do 80....

Google 'Moota' 'crash' then see who is ridiculous. Done! 1 of 2 (fatals): the 2 cyclists (mentioned by boomer), who were travelling in the same direction as the coach that hit them (case to be heard in June). Hard to see how DWLs help there. 2 of 2 (fatals): the 4/5 people that died because one of ...

Original article, with link to the study: http://uk.cars.yahoo.com/news/swindon-has-uk%E2%80%99s-safest-roads-after-scrapping-speed-cameras-20120326.html Rather suggests the cameras weren't doing very much at all, instead of the carnage that the likes of Brake have been saying would happen after the...

To be a streetlight it has to light the street, at night, when it is dark . That is the definition someone posted on these forums some time ago. If it does not light the street at night, when it is dark then it is not a streetlight. Daytime, when it is light is not relevant. I think there is an iss...

Road taxes have increased above inflation . Fuel duties are through the roof. There are comparatively very few new roads being built nowadays (we're fortunate enough to have had previous generations build them for us). Maintaining should be considerably cheaper than building. Yet road pricing is bei...

I actually thought the 10% + 2 mph was to ensure that no defences that the equipment was inaccurate or the car speedo was wrong etc. would stand up in court. It is more of a legal/practical issue than a technical one. Car speedos are not allowed to underread (show a reading lower than the true spee...

... the 10% + 2mph rule will not be applied. If this is technically possible ... As odd as it may seem, that isn't impossible. ACPO guidelines being guidelines and any speed over the limit being an offence aside, Motorways are classified as 'special roads', where processes such as 'corroborating op...

I thought part of the definition of a street light is that it operates during the "hours of darkness", if it gets turned off while it is dark then it ceases to qualify as a street light. If we apply that logic, would a great many residential areas suddenly become NSL during daylight hours...

Apparently there was a hand gesture but not a civil one.

Thanks for the location Malcolm. It does suggests your vision behind could well have been limited such that you couldn't have had a warning. Judging by the angle on the junction (as shown in the Google Maps image), the right wing and rear view mirror probably wouldn't have been of much use. I think ...

Passing someone indicating right, on their right, in order to continue onwards, is extremely foolhardy. The actions of the cyclist seem to indicate ignorance, aggressiveness and competitiveness. IIRC (I don't watch TV), there was a "Think Bike" advert that portrayed a motorcyclist being cl...

Today ,Mrs B got a circular from our local Labour group. One point in it was that due to financial constraints, the county council was looking at switching off street lights from midnight to 05:30 am ,except in areas covered by CCTV. Possibly political ,but got me thinking. I've always been led to ...

so which of those is actually a criminal offence ? That's not what you were originally asking; you have introduced the new factor: "criminal". Returning to your original question: RTA1988 makes it quite clear that cycling in a certain manner is an offence. IMO the swerve of our cyclist cl...

I still feel that the bus gate & road layout may play some part here and I don't know what a sensible solution to this kind of traffic segregation & reintegration at the junction is. In this case, all the road users had to do was recognise the imposition and simply “merge in turn”, like a g...

Ed, I give credit to the judge for making a good call in this now.. Seconded. When I first saw the violence of the driver in the video, I initially thought too myself "Only 17 months? This is a bike forced under a bus with intent FFS!" I could not find any case summaries to explain why the...

Added to that is that "cyclists are often reluctant to slow down if they (we) can avoid it" (link).
Given the cyclist chose to totally close what was a sizeable gap, I think this is further indication of the selfishness/competitiveness of that cyclist.

Does anyone know whether the bus needed to take the right ? I can't find any useful info (apart from the bus company being called Bugler Coaches). I would also be very interested to know if the cyclist needed to turn right. The most I can glean from various articles is that he was pedalling "f...

There's more. See this footage (Yahoo) , from 30 seconds onwards. The cyclist begins to cycle away at 37 seconds (after blocking the bus, propping his bike on it and "flipping the wiper") adopting "primary position" - which would inescapably be construed as "hogging the lane...

gavin_hill_and_cyclist_preb.jpg In that frame, where the bus is clearly seen indicating, there is about 7 meters (along the ground as a reference) between the rear panel of the bus and the front of the front wheel of the bike, in the direction of their travel. gavin_hill_and_cyclist_pre2.jpg That d...
