The 'gadget limit' needs to be set at 'net benefit'. Mobile phone conversations affect hazard development visualisation in some drivers and are a very special case. It seems different distractions affect different drivers adversely then. So some people find a satnav more distracting than others, as...

Lets take a less new example... Situation: A few people have crashes because they're trying to change CD while going down the motorway You: Lets ban car radios No no no no, utter rubbish. I never said ban radios and I never ever said ban satnav either. You're not the first to try and put those word...

...It proves nothing untill you can give me the following statistics:... I really suggest a career in politics - you may do very well. The obviousness of distractions being a bad thing is right there in front of you but you want more statistics. Road safety statistics are based on what you find in ...

All we know is that two people drove into the river. Hi Lum, actually it's 2 people per day on average, not just 2 people. As for it doesn't prove anything about Satnav being dangerous, you may be right. What is may prove though is that some people with Satnav in front of them are not paying attent...

does "pay attention to the bloody road, idiot" sum it up for you then? Yes it does, thank you. Now all we need is a police presence to actually tell people this simple information. 2006 simulated police-to-driver conversation: "excuse me citizen of indeterminate colour / shape / size but while I re...

As I've said in earlier posts I'm calling for CLEAR and SENSIBLE RULES on the use of this equipment and why do you think we need even more rules when the present rules are more than capable of dealing with the situation if only there were some police around to enforce them? 'Scuse me, I never said ...

I personally hate mobile phones as a totally unnecessary intrusion into my private life and if anybody wants me then they can leave a message on my answer machine which I will pick up when I can be bothered.... ...Perhaps the question should really be "why is that drivers feel that they have the ti...

So what are you proposing - a Sat Nav Licence with associated test, and proof of licence required before you can buy a handheld unit or even a car with one fitted? No, wrong, you've not read the posts and you're putting words in my mouth. As I've said in earlier posts I'm calling for CLEAR and SENS...

So what are you proposing - a Sat Nav Licence with associated test, and proof of licence required before you can buy a handheld unit or even a car with one fitted? Apart from having a general slagging off of Sat Nav and a few people that are struggling to drive in unfamiliar territory, do you have ...

She also sometimes has "directional dyslexia" when we are driving in Europe as she has mentally remapped left and right, so I get "turn left just here...", "no you have missed it, that left turn!", "Oh sorry, I meant right." So not very different from the GPS software that sends people through deep...

...I use sat-nav, and I don't drive over roundabouts, into rivers, through red lights, etc., etc., etc. So if we could have little less knee-jerk... Precisely. A little less knee-jerk would be good. Did you read [quote="curmudgeon]Just how are the pro-GPS crew going to defend it this time I wonder?...

Well, here we are a couple of months on and the popular attention seems to be turning a fraction. A little less concentration on the sales boom and related profit opportunity of Satnav and a little more on the implications. A quick Google reveals reference to a few insurance company studies about th...

Given a choice of distraction between GPS and Girl in Short Skirt you can insert the GPS in an orifice of your choosing. Do what you want; I'll be over here thinking about the short skirt.

The question is, how many of the people in GPS distraction accidents would have just found something else to distract them if the GPS were removed, and then had the accident anyway. ... Is it an additional distraction, or just replacing other distractions? They're so crap at driving we should just ...

Thank you both for the last couple of posts. I am not trying to destroy GPS as it's clearly a useful tool when used appropriately. What I am trying to do is highlight the potential dangers of the additional distraction caused to average or sub-average driver (i.e. 60% or more of the road population....
