There was a superb article on the Radio 4 Today programme this morning about crash investigation. They interviewed Dr. Chris Elliot from the RAC foundation. The "Listen again" can be found here http://news.bbc.co.uk/today/hi/listen_again/default.stm . Scroll down and find the article at 8:...

Moderator message: I've merged this post from a parallel thread. S http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/suffolk/8035511.stm The boss of a speed camera firm has admitted driving at more than 100mph on a 70mph road in Suffolk. Tom Riall is a chief executive of Serco, which has provided more than 5,000 ...

That was before speed cameras and a long time before speed awareness courses. This story is a bit too "Daily Mail" and gives no indication how much money he makes from the speed awareness courses, only the total from his business.

Square socket drain plugs are not at all unusual. I've got a tool that looks like a dumbbell with different sized/shaped "keys" sprouting in all directions for undoing various drain plugs. I reckon I must have had it 25 years. What really annoys me is when manufacturers use different types...

GreenShed, how would you feel if you joined a road from a side turning with no speed limit signs and proceeded along it at 50mph only to receive a NIP in the post two weeks later because the road actually had a 40mph limit? If the authorities want to rigidly enforce limits with no discretion then t...

It always seems odd to me that car manufacturers are very reluctant to cut list prices, but are prepared to offer all kinds of discounts to buyers, which are often dependent on individuals' ability and willingness to haggle. Surely it would make sense in marketing terms simply to quote lower headli...

But cheap though! To be honest, I've never much liked belt-driven cams. I am gratified to see a number of modern manufacturers reverting to the old chain-driven systems again. I think the belt drives are quieter, cheaper to make, lighter, and have less inertia but on balance, I'd rather pay more fo...

But it still does not explain why this country ceased to operate over a few inches of snow when the incredibly bad winter of 1942 did not stop the war effort nor did 1963 with months of frozen solid rivers and seas .. along with feet of snow in the rurals .. . prevent England's main towns .. like L...

It's a fundamental engineering law that when the part that "never goes wrong" fails it will cost a fortune and be impossible to get to. :) That's the trouble with modern cars. They are basically very reliable but when something fails it will be buried inside the dash or require the engine ...

I'm puzzled that you run a French car though. They've a generally fairly poor reputation for reliability. I reckon the reputation is largely unfounded as far as major problems go. My experience of French cars has been that they have a tenancy for bits of trim to fall off and so start to look a bit ...

I suggest to take photos.. get evidence of police reports und the invoice to farmer responsible for the mud spread.. Why should the farmer pay? If you drive in a rural area you can expect there to be mud on the road at this time of year. Mud is not invisible you know! If you see mud you have to slo...

My point is speeding kills. No it doesn't. Crashing sometimes kills but speeding never does Why do you believe that if someone does 35mph through a 30mph limit with open fields both sides that they will kill someone? We would see far more improvement in road safety if we could get people to look fu...

Lucy, you are doing yourself no favours whatsoever. Further evidence can be found with a quick Google search that you may not have any relevant qualifications. Somebody calling themselves Lucy W posted this on the Shropshire Star website: I dont think I have ever said I am an expert on mechanics, bu...

I await with interest the result of Claire's checks, but have no doubt that you are who you say you are. As for Lucy, well I have very little knowledge of the law and so have no...
