Forum: General Chat   Topic: Car glut, yet prices go up.

It always seems odd to me that car manufacturers are very reluctant to cut list prices, but are prepared to offer all kinds of discounts to buyers, which are often dependent on individuals' ability and willingness to haggle. Surely it would make sense in marketing terms simply to quote lower headli...

The arm of my firm which deals with private clients has had loads of calls today from customers wanting their end-of-month invoice to be dated 1st December instead... Thats fair enough, after all 2.1% off is better than a poke in the eye with a blunt stick. But these are clients who have already ma...

I wonder if the pound shops will have to put up new signs calling themselves the 97.9p shop? On a more serious note, all buisnesses that currently reclaim the VAT on petrol & diesel will now find that there fuel costs have gone up as they can now only reclaim 15% rather than 17.5% as the additio...

Thats true, I looked up the value of my 2001 Galaxy now I have finished paying for it. Looks like I will be keeping it for a while yet.

Cheating drivers 'put lives at risk' http://news.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/hi/the_p_word/newsid_7672000/7672049.stm Loved this quote - "The charity says if motorists drive badly enough to get 12 points, and the automatic ban that comes with them, then they're too dangerous to be on the roads." 35...

Two journeys in the same car (1.9 td auto Galaxy) mostly motorway using cruise control:- 1) 70mph, computer showed average 46mpg 2) 50mph, computer showed average 55mpg Any chance on your next trip, you can find the nearest 56mph speed limited truck, set your cruise control to follow that, and post...

The cause was the lack of observation of potential danger around the bend, and not driving safely enough - were this to be a real 'accident'. If this was in responce to the caravan accident in my earlier post, then the reason given was a tyre blow-out on the caravan. Any driver going at a rate less...

Draco I have towed with 4 different cars, many years back (25 or so) I uesd a 1.6 Capri (very short rear overhang) and a 2.0 auto Manta Coupe. More recently with my Abbey I have used a 98 Zantia 1.9 TD estate (hydraulic rear suspension made it very stable) and now use a 2001 1.9 td auto Galaxy (spot...

Clearly...you have never towed one........ Not quite so clear it seems, I have been towing an Abbey Vogue GTS 416 for the last 6 years (not constantly of course before you ask). My comment was based on the poor standard of driving often seen by caravans being towed, I cant help feeling that if cara...

What a waste of time, sitting through the whole race, enjoying the last few laps, celebrating Hamiltons win only to find out he didnt win after all. Perhaps there should be a delay of a couple of days after the race has finished before it is televised so that the results can be massaged before the f...

Familyman, ..... (couldn't find the Quote button, sorry!) "70mph with a caravan isn't safe"?..... 70 mph is safe with a caravan assuming the driver is competant, 120mph is probably safe too, in fact any speed that the complete outfit (including driver) is in control is probably safe. Howev...

I'm sure this "it wasn't my fault" attitude comes from childhood, like when a child runs into a table and starts crying it's common for the mother to bang the table and say "naughty table". Whenever one of my kids run's/falls into/onto something and starts crying I always ask if...

Not the way I see it. If you keep all the circumstances the same but remove the sheep, the accident wouldn't happen (i.e. would not be "caused"). Naturally, it's my FAULT, but I don't see "fault" and "cause" as necessarily being the same thing. But this is like saying,...

I have to say that driving on a motorway slower than a lorry these days is crazy.... You're just trying to cause an accident at that speed! IMO the word "Motorway" suggests SPEED. Therefore if you want to drive slowly or are not capable of safely doing so......take the "A" road....

I tend to drive around 50-60 on the motorway, once again to try and reduce my fuel costs. I havent yet worked out what difference it makes in my 1.8 petrol Mondeo but in my 1.9 diesel auto Galaxy with the cruise controll set to 50, I have achieved a reported (trip computer) 55mpg, this compares to a...

Tough luck DieselMoment, better luck next time. When I did my CBT (it was a few years ago now!) I went with CSM, their instructors were great and it seems they had a very high pass rate. Mind you I was doing a 5 day novice to full licence course which may have made a difference. We had one day for t...

The safety debate is more interesting with an electric scooter, the brochure quotes an advantage of it being "nearly silent". I keep thinking of the pedestrian merrily walking out in front as you you do 40+ down the road because they didnt hear you comming.
