I would like to express my sadness and shock at this awful news. My deepest and most heartfelt condolances to Claire, and to Paul's family. May Paul rest in peace while others build on his achievements creating a lasting memorial to his life. Paul's campaign will save many lives - a fitting testamen...

You could improve the quality of life in urban areas to a far greater degree by banning delivery trucks and vans - they take up more space, pollute more, damage the roads more and create more noise than the average car. But that's never mentioned (what else would bring the environmentalists their fa...

I'd concur with that for the most part. What I really noticed was how willing continental drivers were to pull back in after overtaking on DC. Of course they all went crazy on the rare three lane bits (just like England really). Italy on the other hand... My God that was frightening. Coming round a ...

Professor Steven Jones, who lectures in physics at the Brigham Young University in Utah, says the official version of events is the biggest and most evil cover up in history. Brigham Young Unversity is a Mormon establishment with very weird political views and a long and distinguished history of od...

Whilst on holiday in Hay on Wye a week or so back, I bought a 1st Ed. copy of a book called “Motorcars” by Phillip A Turner (Published by Temple in association with “The Motor” in 1958). I was given that book by a grandparent when I was 6 years old (he was cleaning out his loft.) I loved it and rea...

OK, if the handbrake struggled too, the shoes are a good place to start! IF they're worn out, great - that's the problem. If not, have a look at the auto-adjusters (if it has them). Ford auto-adjusters on drum brakes are famous for seizing up and not allowing the shoes to contact over their full ar...

A number of points here: 1. The MOT tester obviously didn't think it was dangerous otherwise you'd have got a "prohibition" fail sheet rather than just the usual. They all have the power to issue them if they think a vehicle is SO dangerous that it shouldn't turn a wheel until fixed! 2. A...

I have allways wanted a Jenson Interceptor... just to make the winters a bit warmer and a Bristol 404 for sunday lunch in style Oh yes absolutely. I love those choices. But what about a Vignale body FF for instead of the Interceptor? Quite a well known story about the Jensen: An RAF pilot put his b...

Great topic for a Friday. Going to cheat and talk about manufacturers not brands. Ferrari - 1962 GTO. I don't really like modern Ferraris, mostly since an Essex boy 360 owner gatecrashed a conversation about cars I was having with a friend in a pub. Porsche - 959. Was on the last page in a book on s...

Nothing to worry about. This is all just the local councils doing their bit in the war on terror - chasing down bins laden.

As far as I know you cannot drive a car which is not roadworthy, MOT or not. You can drive a car to an MOT station without an MOT but it MUST be roadworthy. If it failed on a brake test I think you could be running the risk (although very small) of getting busted. Cheers Gizmo. I'd have to make two...

Good morning. Just a quick question to check the legality of something. The missus' Fiesta is now declared SORN after it's tax expired on the 31st. Was going to be renewed but it failed the MOT last weekend due to insufficient rear brake force (it did pass the minimum total brake efficiency though.)...

Since this thread started, I've been considering the problem. I think drivers are getting totally the wrong message. We're saying: keep left except when overtaking. When we should be saying: make room for faster traffic to pass you. I've been thinking about it too. I reckon that the problem is peop...

I thought it was just a self-certification, the driver isn't automatically required to take a test and submit the results?

I recently had to fill out a D1 for a replacement license and yes it's just self certification: "Can you see?" was about the size of it.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/south_east/5277958.stm Very interesting and not a bad idea (though I don't like the thought of being stopped when I haven't done anything wrong). Especially notable for this comment: Chris Potter, public health director of Newport Local Health Board, said: "What...

The young lady and I just got back from a 2,000 mile drive to Tuscany and back. I thought I'd checked pretty carefully before we left but I've still broken some of these laws on our drive. No spare specs in Switzerland (by the way, they'll hit you up for EUR30 in road tax when you first enter the co...

From BBC news story today about TfL run speed awareness course: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/5216896.stm Few of us truly appreciate the real and potential dangers of driving even a few miles an hour above the speed limit. Chris Lines TfL With the implication that it's safe as long as yo...

When I was younger it was 90-95 kumquats. Now, 10 or so years on I have a much more powerful car (2 litre Alfa vs. the 1.4 diesel Citroen I did my early motorway driving in), but I'm quite happy at 80kqs. Sometimes I'll press on to 90-95 for a bit if the road is clear but I'm back down to 80 soon en...

Just because she's not really up for being tested again just yet! I'd get shot if I suggested it. Maybe 6 months down the line she'll see it differently.

Her instructor echoed your comments on Pass Plus as well.

There is a desperate sadness about this thread, that this new driver is filled with fear before any other emotion behind the wheel of a car. Surely, this is a prime directive of this site - that we should never be viewed as wrong-doers waiting to be caught. I agree, and part of the reason I posted ...
