My bit of evidence-based argumentation for this thread: a TfL report on research into this very topic. I know it's specifically about London, but most of such research seems to focus on the Metrolops. (I haven't seen a TfBolton or a TfManchester.) OK, 16% is too many, and it's good to hear of someth...

Returning from my lunchtime walk, a cyclist with a helmet mounted camera passed me (first time I have seen this with my own eyes), him travelling on a traffic light controlled roundabout (no ASL on roundabouts). There was a short queue ahead (for the traffic light). He filtered up the left side of ...

Stuff that's already been answered. Don't read between the lines. You are chasing imaginary shadows. Then please explain what your accusation of regression to the mean referred to, if that was not the interpretation you were incorrectly applying. You have acted immediately following an extreme and ...

... effectively riding in too timid a fashion ... ... cowering in the gutter... Your language betrays you - again! Oh, please. My language says what it says - nothing more and nothing less. It was you who, incorrectly, inferred that I was talking about you, which seems quite paranoid. Your understa...

... I also am a car driver with around 350,000 miles of driving experience and I can't remember ever being held up by a cyclist for more than about 10 seconds. As a matter if interest when that cyclist 'holds' you up, have you already assessed that his path was going to hold you up, and that you ha...

As you implied, there are times when I haven't taken control of a situation early enough; effectively riding in too timid a fashion. I am learning when it is important to act earlier, and getting a lot from the videos in that respect. The BMW incident is, as you say, an example. After studying this...

Now please don’t shoot me down in flames for this. :bunker: As if ...! I don't see a kerb in the picture. The wording "Think cyclist" suggests strongly that the sign is addressed at motorists. So it seems the main point of the sign is to get motorists to give cyclists adequate space when ...

Quite a lot of discussion material, which I have read and appreciate, but which it would take too long to answer in detail. There are some key points that I would like to make, though. I am not perfect, though I am learning all the time. I think Mags's point is highly valid: "hindsight; makes ...

Most of the time, as a cyclist, I find that this works remarkably well; both the cyclist and the drivers are courteous to one another, the cyclist mostly stays at the left to let the cars pass by, and the car drivers make space for the cyclist when necessary. I agree most road users are courteous t...

....Making reference to Highway Code rule 169, doesn't really help.... In the far more common case of cycling in traffic during the rush hour, the whole exercise relies primarily on negotiation between road users, but conducted within clearly defined rules and conventions, most of which are describ...

Trip down memory lane... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ySVHFSCV1mo&feature=player_embedded I think a key all along the side would be quite justified in that case. I do feel a bit of nostalgia for those public information films. "Be seen, be safe", "Eh petunia, look at that farme...

I think most of your points have been answered already, so I won't add much. Just to say that the situation with motor vehicles is significantly different to that with bicycles because motor vehicles, even with good drivers, bring significant risks to the public space they occupy. We have already es...

So perhaps we could fund a scheme through financial penalties for offenders. A tax on new bike sales would be another option. I'm sure there are many ways in which we could avoid cost to the taxpayer, can anyone think of any others? As I already said, it is completely inappropriate to make responsi...

Whether it is optional or mandatory is irrelevant for that purpose. Only your inference, not my implication. On the contrary. Your words: "even harder to objectively pin down competent and careful without any training or testing framework" It doesn't have to be about registration, there m...

even harder to objectively pin down competent and careful without any training or testing framework too I'd suppose. It's also not going to keep menaces off bikes. There is a well established National Training Standard called Bikeability, with hundreds (thousands?) of qualified instructors and a te...

Yeah, that's a fairly full-on offence there, with a high burden of proof presumably, Yes, it would work much better if we rely on civil law with presumed liability, then cyclists of all kinds would be well-advised to take out 3rd party insurance. even harder to objectively pin down competent and ca...

I have little doubt, from his actions and response, that the aforementioned blaggard falls squarely in your category 4, and it is these who are most likely to be curbed by the ability to trace them after the fact. And would be highly likely to be unregistered and/or showing a false registration num...

Actually he said it in response to your attempt to put words in my mouth (again), seems pretty clear. I'm not sure what antecedents the pronouns there refer to (i.e. who said what in response to whose attempt ...), but it probably doesn't matter. I wonder if there's any chance of getting this threa...

I believe MGC and you were wrong with your inference ; I see nothing that forwarded registration as the sole solution (hence me claiming stawman). I may not have been clear enough: Is it a straw man? Robin appears to be seriously considering registration as the answer to his problems with cyclists....
