One final point. I have always thought that the VSL cameras were inoperative if there was no sign with a limit on the gantry, and hence have not really taken much notice of them, however last night at about 11:45 I was flashed on an almost empty M25 by the last gantry before the A3 on my way to Lea... |

Perhaps we'd find an accord if the wording was changed from 'know' to 'reasonably expect'? I'm not sure. I'm not an advanced driver but I don't think I've ever (ok not in a long time) driven to expectation which to my mind is another way of expressing "Reasonably expect". Is "know&qu... |

If they do and you hit them, your speed was inappropriate by definition. So do we agree? Not really, we have a responsibility to not pull out in front of someone, but of course the faster you go the longer the piece of road becomes where somebody else who introduces themselves to it in front of you... |

Good question. Given the incredible increase in the number of drivers passing their tests you might also ask why its not actually increasing. Sorry that's bull. The number of cars on the road has been increasing year on year since they were invented. KSIs increased year on year until the late 60's ... |

Can you agree that if the speed is appropriate to the conditions then you are not going to collide with anything? Well sort of, but conditions is a very loose term. You might think that a speed is suitable for the conditions going down a road with lots of driveways on it, and it may well be, as lon... |

Why do you think that road KSI have failed to continue the falling trend since the reduction in Traffic Police and the introduction of automated enforcement? KSI's are still falling, the assertion is that they are falling at a slower rate. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/5387568.stm Okay.... Why is t... |

Yes but things come at you from the side as well, its not just about how far you can see, and what's more, you might not be able to see them, i.e. if you go around a corner too fast you might not see the sheep in the road until it's too late. Can you agree that if the speed is appropriate to the co... |

So why has the attention to speeding laws failed (miserably) to lower our KSI's? Can it be that over attention to an easily measurable yet insignificant safety factor could actually detract from the harder to measure, although important, safety factors, thereby reducing their effect on the overall ... |

Weepej,
Does applying emphasis to the implementation of speeding laws impact road safety in a positive or negative way?
Either way please state your evidence. |

, but by Safe Speed standards if you're not involved in an accident whilst doing something illegal it means it must be safe, right? What has legality and safety got in common? Laws are there to mitigate danger (well, that's their intention), seatbelt laws, red light laws, speeding laws, holding ont... |

I'd rather the law was changed so I didn't risk breaking it while driving perfectly safely. You don't risk breaking it though do you, you KNOW you're breaking it; you know you're doing 35mph, or 65mph. Apologies if I've got you wrong here, but I don't think I have. Well, I fully expect to seeing yo... |

Indeed surely its better to mix with people who oppose my view (and I theirs) than sit on a BB where I just agree with everything that everybody says. This is important and needs reiterating. The Safespeed campaign needs people who do not agree and it needs them to post on the forums. It has been r... |

Paul said himself on a number of occasions that used correctly a small number of well placed speed cameras may have had a positive benefit to road safety however it was their continual misuse by SCPs that were not contributing to road safety meant that they should all be removed. Well, he obviously... |

weepej, The Safespeed campaign is not black and white, we do not have "dissenters" we have supporters and non supporters, all of whom are welcome to discuss the use of the speed cameras in road safety policy, in fact of any issue in that arena, all will support or be un-supportive to vario... |

If that's the case I shouldn't worry too greatly. If your speedo was only a blip above 40 then you were probably doing less than 40 and probably nowhere near the threshold. |

The prosecution threshold is usually 10% + 2mph as per the ACPO guidelines (Code of practice?), although in theory you can be prosecuted at any speed over the limit. This been the case if you were doing less than 46mph then you are unlikely to hear anything. Oh and your speedo can under read by 10% ... |

Montana removed speed limits and the KSi's fell. Montana removed rural speed limits - it did not remove urban speed limits. Yes I appreciate the caveat, however the point was that speed limits do not necessarily reduce KSis and I believe that where trialled in Montana it was the case that KSIs fell... |
