In the late 1950s I was driving on the country lane from Horsham to Rusper. A cock pheasant erupted from the left-hand hedge a few yards in front of me, BANG! - I went straight over him, and in my mirror saw him roll, flutter, then lie still. I wondered - who does he belong to? Me or the land-owner?... |

In the 1940s/50s and perhaps even later, a cycle dealer and builders' merchant in Littlehampton (Sussex) had several novelty bikes. One had 24" wheels built with the hubs about 2" off centre, another was a good attempt at an original Harry Grant/Wally Summers pacing motor-bike (long handle... |

A few years back, after a long session of gardening, I nipped down for refreshment at the "Old House at Home", a 17th Century pub in Broadwater (Worthing) on my commuting bike. The bike looked a bit of a heap - mudguards, saddlebag, 66" fixed-wheel etc. When I came out, it had gone, a... |

About twenty of us were pottering down Walberton Lane (near Arundel) when we spotted a quartette of ladies on HUGE horses. The horses seemed quite fresh and lively, so we dismounted and stood q... |

Cyclists above a certain age, i.e. before the computer age, may recall a tool called a "pothole card", issued by the Cycling Council for Great Britain. You used it to report a pothole or other safety problem to the responsible highway authority, and sent a copy going to the CCGB. Memory is... |

When I started to learn to drive (in 1957 - process is still continuing), the simple mantra was; Signs which warn - triangular. Signs which inform - rectangular. Signs which must be obeyed - circular. That was too easy to remember, so they've changed the words a bit, and have deleted carters' whip s... |
