Thanks for the useful pointers - all good points and help with help with learning from this experience. I must admit, normally I'm pretty good with holding a hand to the mirror as a "sorry/thank you". I guess I just felt a little more "in control" by being infront, rather than ha...

His view: You were in the "wrong" lane and should have given way. Your view: There are a lot of "Merge in Turn" signs so what you did is OK. Yep, that seems a fair summary. Until people understand that the (still unusual) practice of Merge in Turn does not demean their manhood t...

Apologies for the length of this post. Last night I came within inches (literally) of being another statistic of road rage - I'd be interested in any pointers on what other people think I may have done wrong, or not have helped... In "X marks the spot" style, I've driven the Avon Ring Road...

Just heard this news, and I'm stunned. Road safety has lost a true campaigner.

My thoughts are with Claire, his family and friends.

johnsher - thinking about it, the view is a little more open than my original post may have suggested, but the satellite maps on Google are a little deceptive. As I was initially overtaking, I'd say (and this analysis is starting to cloud my recollection slightly) I had 3 or 4 car lengths' worth of ...

Hi, Came across a tricky situation on my way home yesterday afternoon, and I'd be interested how other people will have dealt with it... The location, marked by the spot.... http://tinyurl.com/2kwwj9 . Driving along the B4058 from Frampton Cotterell to Iron Acton. This is a single carriageway 50mph ...

No real fog there tonight... But driving round town I saw a police car coming at me with front fogs... Maybe I was just being a pain in the arse, but I called the station up and mentioned this to them... Sadly I didn't get any details of the car as (funnily enough) I was blinded by his fog lights.....

Likewise I'd argue that a short (and I mean SHORT) conversation on hand-held is no more dangerous than fiddling with the stereo or heaters... The only danger with that is, define short. With one hand clamped to your ear, you only have one hand to share between the steering wheel and gearstick. Say ...

I'm also a little bit uncomfortable with some of the wording I've seen so far. At the outset, I'm totally in favour of banning hand-held phones while driving. Only yesterday I noticed someone dialling out while waiting at the give-way line of a major roundabout - looking straight down at his lap. BU...

I've forwarded a link to this thread to a friend of mine in mid-Wales, he's sent me this in response: If you'd like to post a reply on my behalf, please do. Basically, the other reason this story appeared in the SS is because of a fatal RTA at Middletown, about 200yds east of the end of the 50 and t...

Queue. Period. No way. The whole point of driving is to get somewhere, and if the road is free, use it to get closer to where you want to be. If people want to sit there and stew in their own juices, that’s their own lookout. I like to poodle down to the front, nice and slow like, and then nip in n...

This is something that came up on my IAM observed run earlier, and it provoked a bit of a (polite of course) debate between myself and my observer. He knows I'm posting this (we discussed the reasoning both sides in our debrief), it's to get a consensus of opinion from the "regulars" (and resident T...

The approach taken by different local groups does vary somewhat, but typically you would get a couple of classroom sessions and six to eight 90-minute observed runs to prepare you for the test. Some groups allocate each associate a specific Observer, others rotate them. It is well worth doing, but ...

The upstream went via cellular 3g network from my laptop. The 'datacard' lost connection and indicated 'no network'. It's NEVER done that before or since when there's been good signal strength. I'm tempted to suspect that it was a cellular network problem and nothing to do with my equipment. Though...

I came to this meeting, and was most impressed. Apart from the idiot sat next to me who was clearly intent on disagreeing with Paul right from the start. Every opportunity he could, he muttered some negative comment or insult under his breath just loud enough for everyone in earshot to hear. I whisp...
