This is supposed to be science at the layer of setting research objectives. The big problem with the existing literature is that few tasks enable those involved to adjust their own work rate and stress level, and few tasks require the uninterrupted long term vigilance required by driving. Hi Just r...

Hi Great stuff in this page! I think there's one problem related to SMIDSY that you failed to mention. I noticed I pick up most traffic thanks to peripheral vision. Peripheral vision is sensitive to - movement - contrasts Central vision mostly picks up cars in front travelling in the same direction ...

Hi Paul. Coming from a country (France) where 130km/h, ie 81mph, is the norm, setting the UK limit to 80mph would make perfect sense to me. Now, in my country, there was recently a proposal to rise the limit to 150km/h (93 mph) on 3-lane motorways, like they did in Italy. Of course, the dominant thi...

One thing that one is rarely aware of, as far as braking distances are concerned, is that, quite often, one can stop in much shorter distance that we even think. The actual stopping distance of a modern car on a dry road is very short indeed, and we almost never use that capacity in normal driving (...

Hi In France, I heard of a similar project... and then later I read somewhere that those in charge of road safety were thinking of how to get around the fact that the driver following is not always responsible for the close distance. In that piece of reading, I think the idea was to have a police of...

Hi Interesting page, with quite a detailed look at the problem. One line catched my attention: "They fail to recognise the huge value of the "closed loop" hazard speed feedback system that drivers use accurately and instinctively. " I don't think this notion of "closed loop" feedback has been explai...
