Thanks for the support guys, but I've decided to knock driving on the head for at least a year or so. My current standard of driving isn't anythng like up to an acceptable standard, and it seems that my previous attempts to "play it safe" were simply making matters worse. I just don't seem to be abl...

Well If we have one less numpty who drives inappropriately at 22mph (with speedo registering 25mph) - then HURRAH!  :D  Don't celebrate just yet: when the weather doesn't consist of driving sleet, I much prefer to cycle than go by bus, and I can't keep up 22mph on the bike for lon...

Evil Inked Up One I never said I disapproved of the HC! Where in my postings does it say this! We said there is strong possibility of just-over driftings at the fleece spots (which are not blackspots!) If you don't mind me saying so, you don't seem to be too keen on Section 103, which states that "...

You are very vulnerable to a just over drift - just like every other driver on the planet! We find that car will fluctuate from 3mph under to 3 mph over on any given drive - and this will be due to cambers, polish on worn surfaces, crowns of bends, type of surfacing used. The problem is that the Sc...

If a young child runs out from behind parked cars and one hits him at 30mph, is your defence 'I wasn't breaking the speed limit?' Rather you should have recognised the parked cars, residential area and driven accordingly. Just because I don't exceed the speed limit, doesn't mean I don't slow down w...

IMHO that makes you dangerous for reasons Paul has already specified. Paul didn't actually specify the reason(s) he thinks I'm a dangerous driver, but since he, you, and Mad Moggie ( who thinks I'm "stoopid" to boot ) agree that I'm a dangerous driver, then perhaps there's something about my approa...

Since speed camera only catch the stupid, I suggest that the answer to your question is that there are plenty of stupid drivers out there. [snip] On 30th December 2003, a member of my family was caught by a manually operated laser speed trap/video camera. The area being policed was a road where a t...

If you are happy to drive significantly more slowly than you have to for no good real reason except to permit the powers that be to make money from someone more intelligent than you and you accept that without question then I pity you. So given a choice, you would rather exceed the speed limit, pay...
Anyroad, Evil Inked Up One - You have not answered my question! Can you be so sure your speedo is accurate? Can you be so sure that you have NEVER EVER drifted over a posted limit? I doubt it!
I'm satisfied that my speedo is reasonably accurate - my car's only five...

Most rational people would rather adjust their behaviour and keep their license rather than continue to flout the law and lose it. Why, in that case, are the numbers of people prosecuted for speeding rising through the roof? Why are more people expected to be caught speeding this year than any othe...

DeMolay,
The point of speed limit enforcement is not to criminalise 99% of drivers, it is to convince those drivers to comply with the speed limit. Most rational people would rather adjust their behaviour and keep their license rather than continue to flout the law and lose it.

Mr Evil, your logic is completely broken. :) Do you work for the DfT by any chance? Just because forcing drivers to stick to the speed limit would be dangerous nationally does not imply that an individual is dangerous because he chooses to stick to the speed limit. So I'm not a dangerous driver, bu...

 Paul is right - speed cams are as much use as a chocolate fireguard when it comes to road safety! Do they catch drunk drivers? NOPE! Drugged drivers? NOPE! Boy racers? Well - most boy racers would have nicked the car and the NIP goes to registered keeper - so NOPE! And aspirin doesn't cur...

I hope and pray that drivers never stop speeding. There's no sign of it so far. If they did it would mean that the responsible majority had given up the task of selecting an appropriate speed according to the conditions, and that would be truly frightening. As we've tended to move in this direction...

Evilinky, I don't think you have even begun to think this through. In light of some of your comments below, this is a clear-cut case of the pot calling the kettle black. Yes. Typical drivers with more speeding convictions have a higher annual accident risk. That's because of exposure - higher milea...

If we make drivers a tiny little bit less attentive to a risk ahead with our national "speed kills" policy, it should be easy to see that average accident severity might well increase because the attention effect swamps the speed effect. But there's no evidence that drivers who ignore speed limits ...

The 12mph can be summed in a single sentence:

"We'd have more accidents if drivers drove with their eyes shut"

Why does Paul find this rather obvious observation so revolutionary ?
