I heard from a non-traffic PC that there is a way of avoiding points endorsements. Overpay the fine. A cheque for £60.01 cannot be processed and until it is the points will not go on your licence, you cannot be charged for failing to pay and end up playong postal ping-pong with the cheque in prepaid...

Well I asked the question and yes there is software being employed that determines the length of the vehicle. From this the camera may be triggered at a speed lower than the set limit. The rest of the process is done by standard checks on the number plate and the picture check. How this applies to ...

It's unlikely that a system of technical discrimination could pick out a light van because it's over 2000 Kg GVW. I know just the person to ask on this one and I will also pose the question of whether the systems are being employed and where. A few months ago he did say that there was a "situation"...

Despite average premiums for both comprehensive and non-comprehensive cover increasing by 71% since 1996, the motor insurance sector as a whole has only achieved underwriting profits in two of the last ten years (2002). Incidentally the fact that insurance companies invest their money is not hidden...

I think the fact that they pay more out in claims and expenses than they take in premiums would indicate that premiums are not a rip off, but a fairly accurate indicator of risk for the insurer. But that was not the plan, the plan is to make a moderate profit on premiums that could be declared with...

At least with things as they are, we are pricing some of the high risk drivers onto the bus. If we followed this manifesto recommendation, some of the high risk cases who don't drive at all right now because of high cost will go back on the road, Not all high risk drivers are bad ones. There are a ...

....its a racket! And that is just the point. Motor insurance companies are free to do as they please, so they do. They have consistantly refused to provide the information on how the premium is calculated (probably because they know they would be found guilty of descrimination) and they continue t...

A post from another thread, on insurance where the suggestion is for the government to run insurance centrally. Why not run it as a PLC, your premium is a share in the company for 3rd party liability and it is openly calculated by the power to weight ratio of the car (the damage it is capable of cau...

It seems that we have incomparable systems. The NHS covers ALL medical requirements from ambulance, GP to surgery although people CAN take out private medical insurance or buy specific treatment. Loss of earning isn't covered to the same extent although we do have statutory sick pay. So really when ...

IMO the insurance industry needs a big shakeup and something to break the stranglehold that the current cartel enjoy. However, I'm not sure that lumping the legal minimum insurance into the VED, would achieve that because we'd only be swapping a cartel for a monopoly. But it COULD BE a none profit ...

The insurance covers ANYONE involved in a motor vehicle accident including, of course, pedestrians who may have been the cause of the accident to begin with. And they DON'T pay any insurance at all! If I'm understanding correctly you are talking about medical cover for injured parties? If so everyo...

. Full beam headlights that are not dipped for approaching traffic. This seems to be more common when I'm on the bike. I have to put in a bit of a defence for car drivers here. Bike lights tend to be a little higher off the road and a level beam on a bike hits me right between the eyes. I have ofte...

As a public service the government should aim to run it as more or less non-profit, but would obviously retain any money that doesn't go out on claims. Why not run it as a PLC, your premium is a share in the company for 3rd party liability and it is openly calculated by the power to weight ratio of...

Interesting info there, it seems strange that one can't wait for legal advice or even read it but Hey! don't drink and drive. I have a question though, I was stopped, apparently speeding, and was asked to supply a specimen of breath. A bit irritated because I hadn't been speeding either, I provided....

OK we can play table tennis (or ping-pong) for a long time, a lot of this discussion is little more than the prefered history rather than the accurate one and I dare say my information is as dodgy as yours, for example GM did the research on cats way, way back but Volvo fitted the first 3 way cat so...

I appreciate your points Gizmo but: Laminated means the glass is layered, not necessaraly toughened, it comes out in large chunks and it travels large distances. It is also very good at peeling facial skin off in the event it doesn't pop out and fly down the road. Volvo were the first company ...

Oh and I think I'm right in saying that the US has 3 times the fatality rate on roads per 1,000 head of population that we do. Though that might be something to do with drunk cowboys in big pickups:-) They don't tend to have the same safety standards on their vehicles, although things are changing....
