How dangerous is speed? The ABD'S lonely 'factoid' and the real world. The Association of British Drivers (ABD) likes to cite a Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) report as a source for the true contribution of speed to road crashes and casualties. ABD members use the TRL report to contradict the '...

Only when speed considered in isolation. The real world application of this is not nearly as straight forward. Speed is not considered in isolation. Read the report. Speed wasn't the focus, it emerged as the single prevailing factor. Yeah, like their enormous mountain of paperwork! Lobby to reduce ...

Traffic-activated signs can only be placed where the silly criteria for speed cameras are not fulfilled. Winnett and Wheeler (2002) conclude that vehicle-activated signs appear to be very effective in reducing speeds because they can be operated at thresh-olds well below normal police enforcement le...

By what mechanism? Marie Taylor, TRL THERE is a vast amount of evidence demonstrating the strong link between vehicle speed and road accidents. So why does material keep appearing in the media suggesting the effect is small? In the 1990s a number of police forces conducted a limited trial of an exp...

Isn't it funny how these pro-camera types love to conjure up images of boy racers tearing down the high street at insane speeds in order to justify their positions while, in reality, thousands of people are caught for inadvertently going a few mph over an artificially low speed limit on a road with...

there is no substantive evidence showing that exceeding the speed limit is over-represented in the crash statistics, indeed it is extremely under-represented, nor is there any showing that speed cameras are an effective means of reducing them. TRL 421: The authors looked at 300 sections of road, ma...

I don’t know if that’s true. Even if so, would you not agree that the camera policy made it worse? Have you seen the infamous youtube video of the moped riders racing each other in a very dangerous and anti-social manner, yet said "we're too slow to be done for speeding"? It is true, no t...

My definition of "the conditions" includes the posted limit, not least because other people may be making judgements on the reasonable assumption that others will be obeying the law. Don't forget, most cameras are set at significantly above the limit. ACPO guidelines on a NSL road are 69mp...

Then surely a paltry fine and 3 points from a speed camera was not sufficient punishment.

It was an excellent correction to my sloppy driving habit since I learned from it, modified my behaviour and resolved never to be so silly again. I'm thankful I didn't learn a harsher lesson.

(cameras vs trafpol). We have 6000 cameras. Replace them with cops- 20,000 officers assuming 8 hour shifts. That's a lot of tax. There is no link between trafpol numbers declining and camera deployment- read the post above about Blair's rash promise on street crime. * In the UK, 70 children - the e...

These days that reasonable expectation no longer exists, and the onus is now almost entirely on the driver to prevent the accident from occurring, rather than it being - as it should be - a joint effort between both parties. Interesting, what's your evidence for this please? The last TV ads I've se...

A camera will not stop them. You need a policeman to do this. Really. In a car .. MARKED. Perhaps if you read the very first post on this thread? http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=505020&in_page_id=1770&ct=5 New super-cameras mean no hiding for driv...

Where do those posters (or I for that matter) claim never to speed? Are you hard of thinking? No driver never speeds. Two posters said they had never been caught speeding, I took this to mean they did not speed. If, however, they ARE criminals and they DO speed, then I apologise to them for suggest...

Are you now saying wearing seatbelts ist a bad thing? What gives you that impression please? Aside from the abuse, there seem to be quite a few straw men floating around, I explained that the noted phenomenon of heightened security leading to more risk taking: http://mjperry.blogspot.com/2006/11/au...

Again, disingenuous, misrepresentative nonsense. BottyBurp Posted: Mon Dec 31, 2007 12:56 pm Post subject: I have a squeaky-clean licence and have never been caught by a speedcam. Either justify that statement or it will be considered as trolling. Cast your eyes upthread, at least two posters have made it clear they do not speed, therefore I'm taking pains to address speeders, not the people on this site, who deny speeding. Likewise with drivers on mobiles. Someone braver th...

why should the onus always be on the driver to look out for every one else Because drivers are the people capable of inflicting the greater harm. I walk along the pavement when I'm dog tired. I do not drive when I'm dog tired, surely you can see this? Driving has been made more comfortable and sede...

I like Lord Bingham. Lord Bingham expressed it in the Privy Council in the case of Brown v. Stott (see paragraph 31 above), that “All who own or drive motor cars know that by doing so they subject themselves to a regulatory regime. This regime is imposed not because owning or driving cars is a privi...

In any grown-up arguement if one party or the other resorts to insults and jibes they have lost the arguement I've been called a shithead and a charlatan for expressing an opinion, yet the only warnings handed out on this thread are to two posters who support speed cameras. Have a policy on insults...

A camera is - a robot, pure and simple. It's set there to perform a single task which a machine can do: observe and identify someone breaking a certain rule. A mundane task, but it does it well, as I understand things. We employ robots for other mundane tasks where a human element is not necessary. ...
