LOL Paul - are you saying he's going blind........ :? :?: .

I do agree with the original post - cats eyes form an essential part of the infromation we use to judge the bend etc - I think that councils should rate the maintenace of these things as a priority.

We know from simple logic and observation that safe speed behaviour is important, yet, the official emphasis is entirely on speed limit compliance. Paul, Yeah possibly you are right here - we should be concentrating people about speed limit compliance but at the same time we should be hammering hom...

They think things DO happen suddenly and legislate accordingly Paul, The only thing is that things DO happen suddenly and you need to be very aware of the fact - you most certainly need to keep your observation to a maximum and the faster you drive the further out you need to be looking. The exampl...

Tailgating is one of the most frightening things I see on the roads - the HGV's terrify me at times. You see them so close behind each other and sometimes cars. If one breaks hard they don't stand a chance.

Very scary

Or to put it another way - we can't teach advanced driving to learners... :) Paul, Check out my post here regarding this - http://www.safespeed.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1218 . Steady on Rich! We need to deal with real risks and potential risks. If we deal with wholly imaginary risks we have les...

But our national speed limit set up does not allow us to distinguish between the 80mph sections and the 60mph section... It's very difficult to legislate isn't it..... :? . I'm not sure there even is an answer to areas like that short of keep changing the limit signs but that can get very confusing...

Many of the problems with new drivers comes down to a sense of their own invulnerability. They feel that they have passed the test and can do anything and everything with skill. There needs to be more awareness training for new drivers, whatever their age. They need to be made aware of potential pro...

Someone could have been killed as a result of this overtake if the place was inappropriate. And if my uncle was born a woman he could have been my aunt! If everyone has that attitude then the road casualty rate is going to sky rocket :x . Every time we go out in our cars there are many What If situ...

Ah Paul, Not just that silly test in Roadcraft - I thought you were referring it the text that accompanies it in the chapter. The point I made was Atttitude and how that can effect your driving and not Attitude to speed - although that does have an effect. I was a neutral on speed based on that test...

How about improving the driver training in the first place and beefing up the testing proceedure? This rule has been put in place to try to make newer drivers stick to the law - it doesn't just apply to speeding, anything that can give you points on your licence applies. And 91 is hardly the crime o...

To Roger and Willcove - Yep I agree 100% with what you have said about looking forward, seeing the signs and adjusting your speed for them. Perfect driving, too fast....hehe....but perfect. I really need to explain more when posting - I was talking about the times when it happens very fast infront o...

I've just read the Speeding page on this site - http://www.safespeed.org.uk/speeding.html I must say that the arguement there is very well put and very well thought out. I agree with many of the points listed - especially the one with regards to WHO sets the limit. That should be left to experts. In...

If I was driving at 100mph I would be looking a LOT further ahead than at 70 mph and concentrating a LOT harder on the task of driving. I might even have a better chance of seeing this lorry as it started to lose control and take avoiding action earlier. And that action might have been to accelerat...

I don't think this sort of imaginary example is realistic enough to be useful. Oh it is, if you drive on any busy Motorway you will have been caught up in one of these hold ups. Just look ahead and you'll see idiots undertaking, changing lanes etc to get that "Extra" little bit of speed, causing fo...

Have a look at the police roadcraft handbook it has an interesting and useful technique regarding following the point enclosed by the 2 sides of the road at a bend. Basically as you approach the bend if the point is moving around the bend the speed you are approaching at will allow you to safely ne...

I'll tell you what I do. I drive with varying degrees of what I call "attack". Maximum attack leads to maximum safe progress. I suppose the opposite extreme might be called "wafty mode", (well that's what we call it, anyway.) When driving with high levels of attack, other road users are regarded as...

Speed Kills? OK, I feel that I am fairly qualified to comment on this subject. I am one of those that some of you would consider the Dark Side - a police advanced driver. Lets get the record straight - speed on it's own is not a killer. As some have pointed out I am TRAINED to drive very fast, that ...
