The worrying thing to me is that speed limits have become s farce with little relationship to the features of the road. Most these days appear to be set at the whim of parish councils. |

The trouble with Brake is they seem to forget it is not only drivers who have resposibility for safety, but all road users and parents have responsibility to ensure their children are safe. How often do you see a toddler way ahead of mum walking along chatting to a friend with no thought about the c... |

The way we are going this Country will strangle itself applying petty rules, common sense seems a thing of the past. Which is more important a bus being held up or an ambulance? |

I can't see, unless there is something missing from the report, why "drivers had to swerve to miss the van"? This would imply that the drivers behind were not concentrating. Not that I am defending the driver staying in the outside lane, but the police report did seem a bit over dramatised. |

That was exactly my thoughts, not a mention of any safety benefit, which would suggest that there has not been any. Malcolmw, they couldn't use lorries going faster as being of benefit, as that would demolish their argument that slower speeds are safer. I agree that bringing in two initiatives compl... |

When driving you have to pick a time when road conditions allow for things like adjusting radios, heater controls etc. I am still not convinced that a short conversation on a phone, providing it is done at a suitable time and if it is not suitable you just stop talking until it is, is worse than whe... |

Reading through the various comments it seemed the most relevant was the comment that basically said it doesn't matter what the speed limit is, it should not make you any safer or less safe. In other words if you are driving correctly then you should be driving at the appropriate speed for the condi... |

It has been reported in the local press that the 50MPH speed limit, campaigned by local councillers from Ringwood, has been rejected following lack of support by the police. Out of 59 accidents over the last 3 years only two were put down to speed. I thought one of the comments reported from a couci... |

To me it would be far better if night driving was included during the learning process while under instruction and included driving on rural road so that proper use of the headlights is learnt. |

So therefore one has to drive to suit the actual conditions, which are continually changing, consequently what is a safe speed will also be continually changing. As Big Tone said, all a speed limit decides is that you are within or outside the law, which at least at one time was based on reasonably ... |

Seeing the A31 is a trunk road, why does the Councillor for Ringwood, which is a market town off of the A31, think that he should have sole durasdiction on setting the speed limit for the road? Most of the accidents on this road, as the police have pointed out, are rear end shunts and these tend to ... |

corners with hatched white lines Yes. You need to be careful with these. Especially if the hatched section has an unbroken white line surrounding it. No crossing except in an emergency, as I was told. They are intended to force traffic to slow down and take more care. And to my mind an absolute was... |

To say that we all have exactly equal responsibility for road safety is patently ludicrous. The more able must always use their ability to protect the more vulnerable. And that is particularly true when those more able are in a position to inflict severe damage, such as being at the wheel of a moto... |

Tell me something Weepej, if the road is clear and there will be times when the busiest street is, why is a 20mph limit so important? It still gets back to a safe speed is relative to conditions and as conditions are constantly changing so does a safe speed. Cos it would cost far too much money to ... |

I too have wondered what this is supposed to achieve other than obstruction and conflict. At one time it was considered incorrect for cycles to pass vehicles on the inside, but now it seems anything goes. Mind this is only one of the daft things that seem to be around these days, like corners with h... |

Making several changes at the same time is the fatal flaw, so now we don't know which is really making the difference. But the cynic in me makes me think that is deliberate. |

I have just read the following statement on the Hampshire Constabulary Safer Road site under the heading Speed. "The legal speed limit is carefully set as the maximum safe speed for the road." It may have been set as that, but I would question the "carefully" or the "maximum... |
