Just listened to the Jeremy Vine show today, on the subject of cyclists and their use of roads and pavements. On my way home from work, early for a change, driving upt to the roundabout by the local Technical College, I was doing about 20mph, cyclist on the pavement, just as I came level with his b...

How do you know? He broke a law - he exceeded the speed limit. He may well have been safer than Mr Average doing 70 on the same road. The car is good; the driver masy have had high speed training and his observation skills may well be more than a match for the conditions of the road and hazard dens...

Even if the cylists are to blame from our persepctive, it still makes sense to try to engage them in rational dialog, and try to encourage them to see things from a motorcar's point of view. Thanks to a thread somewhere on this site I recently decided to buy the book 'cyclecraft' - this is more or ...

http://theage.com.au/articles/2004/12/10/1102625533748.html Women's deaths soar as road toll battle stalls Do we know that this trend isn't broadly in line with women's increased participation in the driving population? The stats don't support this. In Vic, there were 2 more female drivers killed t...

The article relates solely to Victoria, not the whole of Australia. Vic and Tas were the only states (out of 8 states/terrs) in which female road deaths in 2004 were up on 2003. Some states saw considerable drops in female fatalities compared to the previous year - (in SA, the figure was down by alm...

[No. I don't think. It seems that cyclists pose a greater risk to pedestrians than light vans. http://www.safespeed.org.uk/pedrisk001.gif from: http://www.safespeed.org.uk/pedrisk.html (full official references given.) Everyone has to share responsibility reasonably equally for road safety. When yo...

Cycling helmets have been compulsory in Victoria for many years and I for one think that this is a good thing. I also agree that as an adult we should have the right to choose NOT to wear one. Maybe the law should be that a minor (under 16) MUST wear a helmet and once they reach 16 they can choose ...

Perhaps less peds would get hurt if motorists were educated on the implications of their driving. (Look how many non-wayward peds were killed or injured on the pavements last year for example.) Works both ways. How many of the pedestrians killed on the pavement were the victims of drunk and/or unin...

Perhaps less peds would get hurt if motorists were educated on the implications of their driving. Sorry...what do you mean by "educated"... :? Perhaps less peds would get hurt if they were educated on the implecations of their actions.. Er, that was the comment I was responding to (from Jules) :rol...

So laws are only there to safe gaurd wayward pedestrians and non road tax paying cyclists, and the drivers and riders can go F*** emselves! I'm a cyclist and I pay road tax (VED). Go figure. Laws should be in the interests of all road users, surely? I have never once implied that laws should protec...

No I don't need one, don't want one, never used one. To me it sounds as if some of the grounds for abolishing speed cameras (distraction) are equally applicable to the use of detectors. Being legal doesn't make them safe. In answer to your earlier question and in response to this statement I ask a ...

At least it helps keeping the screaming rabble away from our cars. My wife's car paintwork is trashed on supermarket car parks by kids flinging the doors open onto the car parked next door (ours). Also parents letting the kids scoot down the car park with the trolly using parked cars as buffers.......

[Yes, it was. Your point? Had kids, went shopping, didn't need "special" parking. Mum ant tots parking is a waste of space. Got it..! Yes, in your opinion. I disagree. For me, they serve a purpose. They certainly mean I can avoid problems with getting the infant carrier in and out of the door. If p...

Perhaps the difference being that with the first four examples, YOU are the only victim of your life-threatening bad habits. Did you ever consider that laws are there to protect others? After all, nobody really cares what you do to yourself, but involve an innocent party? That's a whole different b...

Let me get this right, this site is anti speed cameras because speed cameras are dangerous? Speed cameras divert the driver's attention from the road to the speedo, causing lapses in road concentration, right? But you are pro- camera detectors? Camera detectors which bleep when you approach a speed...

Cleopatra, I think we can all understand your frustration. Might I suggest that if you find all the parent&child spaces occupied, you simply park over two spaces elsewhere in the car park? You will then have further to walk, but should be able to open the door no problem. (In case you can't vis...

Now if you started grumbling about parent and child parking spaces, then you'd have a point. Where it says parent and child parking spaces then take advantage whenever possible. I am 25 but if I was out with my mum I would insist we parked there :D Gareth This is a typically selfish attitude of dri...
