Was just about to make the point that LD-01 has touched upon. Even with every electronic stability aid on the market, one sure fire way to get the back to step out wildly in a RWD car is a clumsy downchange under heavy braking, without making any effort to match the engine revs. Done violently enoug... |

Also, The rule is that the NIP has to be sent to arrive within 14 days. If it gets lost in the post then it is still valid. Yes and No. My understanding is that the law states that the NIP must be served within 14 days. Case law has determined that proof of postage using normal 1st class postage in... |

Last year I discovered that my car was cheaper to insure for 'social and commuting' than 'social only'. :? Mind you they virtually give me car insurance these days for some reason: just had quotes of as little as £240 fully comp for my Group 17 hot hatch. :? :? Ditto. Insuring my 3 Litre engined Be... |

Amazingly someone who had 4 bald tyres recently got £60 fine and 3 points from a court (+15 victim tax and £35 costs) which is an insult. I'd be inclined to strongly agree. ...speaking as one who got a £100 fine + £500 costs for an alleged 46 in a 40, on a deserted motorway, simply for having the t... |

There is a general rule in court that, where more than one offence is sentenced on the same occasion, points are awarded on the most serious offence only. In this case the three offences, two tyres and the phone offence, each carry 3 points. So he could get 3 points. An exception to that rule is wh... |

But if we feed nothing but type 1 drivers into the system they will feed alternately into L1 and L2 at the start of the dual carriageway (as each one joins a lane the other lane then becomes the fastest one, attracting the next in the queue), travel at higher speed throughout it's length and then z... |

Just for fun - here's the full pseudo-code, as developed in JT's mental software development environment, whilst walking the dog in teeming rain this afternoon. We have a busy A road which contains a 10 mile stretch of dual carriageway with S/C at either end. It is a busy bank holiday and traffic is... |

My simulation software (which remains vapour ware, until I get some clarity) suggests that, once you have pulled in, you make matters worse if you let more in. In fact, the (mental) calculation suggests that, once you have pulled over, the least selfish thing to do is the most selfish thing (!), i.... |

If it benefits everyone (which as you say it does) then is it selfishness? You are a martyr sir! Suffering the metaphorical slings and arrows of those that surround you, all for the greater good. One day your sacrifice will be truly appreciated, but probably not, alas, whilst you are still around to... |

Disks are like tyres, If they look worn they are worn! How many of you would be happy using a "Recut" tyre these days?? Let's hope they are like tyres, i.e. plenty of competition to drive prices down, and no trade -secrets - they're just steel plates; no need for the makers to over-egg th... |

Actually I don't think the rate of consumption under these circumstances will be anything like linear, as the friction of the engine's internals and ancillaries will increase dramatically when revved under no load. Please note that I’m not an expert at car mechanics (but I do know physics): I know ... |

I couldn’t comment on wear and tear, but I can give some rough ideas on some costs so possibly giving some perspective. For the cost of refreshing the battery after a restart: assuming a cranking current of 300A@12V for 1 second, is 4.8BHP (for one second). Estimating an engine consumes 1L in 10 mi... |

...The only other thing as dangerous is changing your clothes while driving! If you think that is a hazardous level of "multi-tasking" you're not trying! A few years ago, a friend of mine had an ageing 850 Mini - the sort of vintage that had a "magic wand" gearlever and three sy... |

The "Had Had" phrase ... looks awkward in print. How about this! Dusty, while Abercrombie had had "had", had had "had had"; "had had" had had a better effect on the SafeSpeeders. You beat me to it. Ironically, that actually looks less awkward in print, when t... |

the 2008 figure was higher than the 2005 figure Sorry, JT, but that should read ... Don't tell me what my words should be! Why don't you just read the whole bloody sentence, instead of taking my words out of context? I didn't need your word "MUCH" as it would have been entirely superfluou... |

In effect it still represents a one year "blip". No. It is smoothed over three years in order to to mitigate "blips". If anything, the annual change was MUCH more than 19% at the end of the period. No. From the data quoted, all you can deduce is that the 2008 figure was higher t... |

it spans a short period of time Look at the methodology, JT. Maintenance is trended over three years! What does that mean in practice? It means that the after sample is the same as the before sample, but with the 2005 value replaced by the atypically inflated 2008 value. In effect it still represen... |

Sorry, but that document strikes me as being more of an exercise in political hand-wringing than a serious analysis of motoring costs. Mole asked for figures, and there they are. If major motoring organisations supported your views, you'd be all for it! So don't be sorry, I get the picture. It give... |
