Forum: Cycling   Topic: Cycle friendly 20mph limit for London

The snag is that generally a car moving at 30 mph produces less emissions compared with one moving at 20 mph. Of course if the average speed of traffic in the middle of London is around 11 mph, it's a bit academic.....

Like several others here I'm intrested how "recieved a text while driving" makes a quantum leap to "she must have been replying, lets make that accusation and make her prove innocence" Given that a driver has no control over when people choose to send them messages, how does the...

From the available information posted, it doesn't make any reference to traffic volumes, hence my issue about the validity of any research.

What fascinating ideas.

Going back to the original topic, of course what the "research" doesn't take into account would be any alteration in the volume of traffic. Which could make a big difference to any results.

I disagree. I've cycled & also driven behind people on recumbents. When you're driving up behind them, your eye is drawn to the shape, especially if they have a bendy flag sticking up, and your brain tries to work out WTF it is, as the overall shape doesn't fit into what you'd expect to see on t...

Biofuels are just a red herring. With this sort of thing happening, I certainly wouldn't want to use them. Even if you don't buy into global warming, with the way car use is expanding in China & India, everyone has got to realise that by 20 years time, oil is going to get very expensive.

poor driving has consequences, even if it does not directly translate in to crash stats.

Good point. Is the answer to ensure that all drivers have to have regular re-tests, say every 5 years?

Certainly not! Please don't infer I've said that at all.

I'll admit to doing 80 mph on the motorway when the conditions are safe to warrant that speed.

I was merely saying that the chief constable is irresponsible.

mega link Paul Smith, founder of the Safe Speed road safety campaign, based at Tain, said it proved that speed cameras have not made roads any safer. "Something is clearly wrong," he said. " Are we to believe that our chief constable is an irresponsible driver? I think the answer is ...

In that situation though, if there could only be a husband or wife who might have been driving the car, whilst I agree the police have a duty to try and prove who was driving, if you keep quiet and refuse to say, isn't that trying to pervert the course of justice? In cases where one person uses the ...

This country's going soft. :o

Electric scooters for police?

Max speed 25 mph, range 25 mph and costs £4,500!

Why not give them bikes, less than £1,000 assuming decent kit, range only limited by the number of donuts to be eaten, max speed - 40 + mph assuming a favourable hill. 8-)

Completely back on topic...... What I can't get my little head round, is why you should have a right not to incriminate yourself. Regardless of how you may personally feel about the rights or wrongs of any particular legislation, surely if you have committed a crime, then anything you say sho...

In the same way a small number of people are able to control themselves to beat lie detector tests, some people would be able to get past a psychometric tests. However, people seem to forget that driving a vehicle is a privilege, not an automatic right. If it stops a few nutters with an overly aggre...

I think rather than hi-viz, you're better off having an open jacket which is flapping in the wind. I've followed a few cyclists like that and have noticed the cars give a wider berth. I think the random motion of the jacket catches in the peripheral vision of the driver, so they are more aware of th...

Interesting statistics! I wonder if there's anything listing how many are repeat offenders. Although in 6 months time, I reckon the extra attention the police are giving, to catch the idiots driving whilst using their phones will have died down, the same way it happened when the law first came in.

Talking about pot-holes, this is probably not the right forum for this, but a name and shame website should be started up for this problem as it seems that most councils seem to think we don't mind banging and crashing around( and damaging our cars in the process) on these excuses for roads. Drivin...
