Oh and House.. we shop at Tesco. My wife buys the "value stuff". We find it OK. I bet your wife wouldn't be too impressed if you bought her this though  And on the topic of the off-topic topic ( :P  ), we mainly use Tesco too at the moment, but I think they're getting a bit comp...

For record . you have my support and respect. Thank you :) Like I've said previously, this is in no way intended to restrict police officers or make their job more difficult than it already is. It's about (hopefully) making things a little safer for both the police and public by introducing (what s...

Thanks for the input In Gear :) I appreciate that you do a very difficult job, and I'm sure that you do it to the best of your ability and as safely as possible. You put your lives at risk to help others during emergencies and breakdowns, when there's no choice but to use the hard shoulder - that's ...

:welcome: House Thanks! :D (So are you linked with Tesco ? ) :) Nah. Just couldn't afford a proper ava ;) So then at this point the thought is a layby (like in France perhaps) or barriers placed every so often as added protection in which to hide behind That would be ideal of course, but it's not q...

What proportion of police pulls on the hard shoulder have led to a police car being rammed in the last 50 years? What proportion of hard shoulder uses have resulted in any vehicle being rammed while pulled up in the same time frame? I'd get out of the car and would want to be out of the way on the ...

There is a big difference between someone breaking down, and being stopped by a patrol car. Not least that the latter has an experienced police officer deciding where the stop should be made. Any they have bright strobes to warn traffic behind; however, will a dozy trucker (I'm not saying all truck...

In support of your argument.. When there are road woks on a motorway or D/C they impose a :50: or :40: or less and average speed cameras because the traffic is deemed to be going too fast and dangerously close to the workers, (or should do so when they are actually there :x ). So what’s the differe...

Like I said, it's that kind of "logic" which got us speed cameras, which is why I am against the idea without some stats to back it up. It couldn't be more different than speeding and speed cameras and, with the greatest respect, I gave you the stats already: http://www.highways.gov.uk/ne...

Hi dcbwhaley, Sorry, I did answer that question further up, but it probably wasn't very clear since I was answering both yours and WildCat's questions at the same time. I don't know what the legalities are to be honest, but I can understand why, in some cases, the officers would prefer to have someo...

I could be swayed here. :scratchchin: Before your O/P I didn’t give it much thought and agreed with you, however, I think I can see a drawback in practice. If a traf pol wants to pull someone over but the next junction is 10 or 30 miles away, that seems a ridiculous waste of time and resources. Als...

More grist to this - watch the American version of Police Camera Action. Many a pull has resulted in distraction and serious impact. There's actually a few of them on YouTube, if you search for things like 'hard shoulder accident', 'police accident', etc. Here's a few examples: http://www.youtube.c...

Thanks for all the welcomes :D :drink: How many people is an acceptable number to be killed or injured before something's done? Personally, I think that if the danger is an avoidable one, the answer is none! Hi House and :welcome: Small point... If you take your argument above to the n'th degree we ...

@Roger I think what you have to remember here is that though there is no perfect immediate communication solution, we are talking about the transitional phase. In the worst cases, where a driver is either completely unobservant or uncooperative, the situation would be no worse than it is at present...

Hard shoulder accidents claimed the lives of 67 people in the five years from 2000 ? 2004, and a further 950 people were injured. How many of those were resulting from a police pull? How many of those weren't following on from when the police had to pull (unroadworthy car or driver) ? I don't doubt...

In principle, since therer are no junctions between "pull point" and the next motorway exit, there should be a way of differentiating between "stop ASAP" on the shoulder or "leave at next exit - we're behind you and want a word". One minor problem with that is of cours...

No, I am saying that if it was a real danger then the stats would bear this out and we should be vary wary of making policy based on a perception of danger. Stats can be useful to a degree, but often common sense works much better. For example; I suspect that the number of people killed each year i...

 Thanks for a most entertaining post Mad Moggie! :D I think there's an element of 'The Emperors New Clothes' on PH - which is something that you see a lot on the net, and in real life too .... I'm sure we've all seen plenty of motorways truckers and drivers drift over the rumble strips onto the hard shoulder (I shout 'wakey wakey' each time I see this - dunno why!). So there is a risk, but I don't know how significant it is. Agreed! .. and the significance of the risk could probably be d...

You assert that police stops on the hard shoulder are dangerous, if it really was dangerous then there would be regular deaths, or at least serious injuries. It's not enough to say "it's obvious", often, when the statistics are examined, the obvious turns out to be far from reality. You d...

The dangers of stopping a vehicle on the hard shoulder of a motorway are well known. There have been numerous injuries and deaths resulting from collisions involving fast moving vehicles with those that are stationary on the hard shoulder. At least 250 people in the UK are injured every year on the...
