Good to see he got in a reference to safe speed Might be worth concocting a general reply with an internet address in - then cut and paste when similar opportunities arise. It might increase the 'footfall' at Safespeed for very little effort.

According to the Department for Transport's (DfT) roadside survey in June 2006, VED evasion has risen to 5%, up from 3.6% the previous year. Do they mean tax avoidance which is legal or tax evasion which is illegal or have they put them all together ? I am doing my bit for tax avoidance in sorning m...

Hi,
Note - they never say how many accidents occur above the speed limit. Its the classic catch all it must be speeding.

In many ways I agree with you. Sadly its the innocent that are often the victims of somebody elses stupidity and selfishness.

Hi anton, How many accidents/serious accidents are really due to low level drink? Low level drinking probably IMPROVES the accident rate. NO research has been done to find out why. I think the ONUS is on the people who want a change in the law to prove the benefits BEFORE we change the law. The trav...

Hi Earnest,
Saw the same article. It was mentioned that there were 4 million untaxed/uninsured drivers. The usual figure is 1 million.
Does anyone know what the current estimate is ?

Hi All, I have been trying to get some data together time is lacking sadly. Any death on our roads is an absolutely devastating for anybody. We have over 500 deaths a year caused by drink or drugs. I think this is a highly emotive issue for some - it certainly is for me. We all want to lower the num...

Hi Rigpig, I was trying to say that the vast majority of drivers stay within the drink drive laws. To say that a few get it wrong and then to help the few we burden the many with new un thought out laws . Which could lead to more dangerous roads. The science is very sparse and poor in this area. :) ...

Hi Fisherman, Don't you think that the 99.9999% of the population can decide for themselves. Ban the rest if required. As on another thread by Mole : Educate don't Legislate The more people know or learn the less they get into trouble. Banning any drink at all could INCREASE risk of accidents. This ...

Good site Dusty. I knew for a while that small amounts of alchohol actually reduced accident risk. The government couldn't officially recognise this as it would "send the wrong message". Does this mean that we should ensure all drivers have at least one pint - purely in the interests of sa...

Surely we DON'T want to stop people driving lawfully within the current limit. We want to reduce accidents and injuries. Having a target of reducing the blood alchohol in drivers from 80 max to 50 max is completely a red herring. Reducing accidents and injuries should be the target or is that harder...

Hi Fisherman, It seems that lots of first pass research has been done. Most of this does not give the real life data needed. What I would like to see is what effect does blood alchohol level have on accident risk. From the only scientific approach we have ( based inthe 1960's - see the ABD site ) It...

Thanks for that Pete. Its very interesting. Looks again like the law is being politically driven rather than using evidence based policy. The law really is an ass - no wonder so many people are becoming outside the law. It makes the world a worse place for us all. Very much like the ABD proposals fo...
