The problem with upgrading the "careless" offence to become equal with "dangerous" is that a minor driving error by Mrs Average which has unfortunate consequences would result in a long prison sentence and thus be out of proportion to other offences. For example, Mrs Brown (who ...

OK, the idea of giving cyclist a safe amount of clearance when overtaking them is fine, and many of us have been mindful of that for above 50 years of driving, but when might we expect to hear about measures to discourage a proportion of cyclists from behaving like dickheads?

Best wishes all,
Dave.

It depends on the height relationship between the pedals. With some cars the brake pedal pad was set so much higher than the accelerator pad, that lifting the foot was necessary. IIRC the Ford Consul/Zephyr/Zodiac range of the 1950s were like that, but hopefully more recent designs do not incorporat...

If we're thinking about the same incident, it was indeed a tragic case - loss of spouse - in which an elderly driver pressed the wrong pedal. However, this type of incident is exceedingly rare, and as far as I'm concerned it provides no basis for automatically retesting all drivers when they reach t...

It's a fair point. He WASN'T driving. OK, he was the drivER and HAD BEEN driving, but wasn't at the time of the offence. Even if that one COULD have been argued, what about the case of a 4 door car where a rear seat passenger opens the offside rear door? No reason for the same law not to apply to (...

Notice a marked decline in mobile enforcement in recent months. I also note from other forums that other posters are commenting likewise and it seems to be nationwide. Anyone else noticed this ? No, I regret to say I haven't noticed it; but then I'm not travelling as much these days as I did a few ...

Company tax payable is based on profits though, not income or turnover, is it not? A company could have a huge income/turnover, and still make a loss and eventually go out of business. Now there's a thought....

Best wishes all,
Dave.

Yes, that strikes me as a sensible thing to try. I'd rather they'd have let them run at their governed 56, than 50 though. I think the closer you can get traffic speeds for all vehicles to being the same, the less overtaking we're likely to see. I suppose the only downside is that overtaking someth...

OK then guys, how about this: I have a small hand-held memo taker that I occasionally use while driving. This is for recording details of routes, roads and points of interest like suitable wild camping spots for future holidays in our motorhome. This device is voice activated, so it starts recording...

This only serves to reinforce my feeling that the driving/mobile phone law in its present form was ill-conceived, and that it has ended up as a load of nonsense. So far as hand-held phones are concerned we sometimes hear that you're not allowed to touch the phone, but at other times it is said that ...

Your proposition is completely nuts and without foundation; make a reasonable proposition and I may reply. No, what Mole says is a perfectly valid interpretation of what has been happening. It might be interesting to compare the number of crashes before and after the arrival of the speed cameras. I...

I wonder if ISA based on the degree of visibility would be more use than ISA based on speed limits? I don't know if the technology exists, but it wouldn't surprise me if it did. Certainly the earlier comments in the article about the radar-based Advanced Emergency Braking systems would have been ve...

Will be interesting to find out how many of these drivers did stop before they hit the pile of vehicles in front. Of course, travelling at a suitable speed and managing to stop in time is all well and good, at least until some twunt piles into the back of you. Apparently the fog caused it. Rubbish,...

It doesn't surprise me that weepej is sticking to his view, but I still think he's wrong. I am, however, surprised to see the somewhat dogmatic line, and slightly offensive tone, adopted by Oscar. Just because some research is claimed to have been done, there is no certainty that it correctly identi...

If I use my mobile phone while driving How stupid are you? Simply using it put you in a situation where you clearly aren't in proper control of the vehicle, you've only got one hand free for a start. If something happens and the police check your phone records you'll go down as using a mobile whils...

Using a mobile while driving is not automatically dangerous, at times it can be done perfectly safely. Utter utter b****ks, a driver using a mobile phone immediatly cripples their ability to control the vehicle in relation to their ability to control it without using the phone. No, Homer is right. ...

A welcome outbreak of common sense from Eric Pickles http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-23837610 But will councils take any notice? This is by no means the first time Eric Pickles has produced a welcome bit of common sense, but I very much doubt if the predominently anti-car local authorities wi...
