My route to work is either stop/start main road or a rat run with speed humps. The former takes an extra 20 minutes or, put another way, the latter shortens my working day by 20 minutes. So I use it. The rat run didn't used to have speed humps. It does now. The volume of traffic has reduced slightly...

{snip} then we all face the nightmare scenario of being convicted for manslaughter for commiting a human error. That is exactly what manslaughter is - taking the life of another by one's own erroneous and unpremeditated action. What have I missed? You are right of course and haven't missed anything...

Looks good - but I need an hour of shut-eye. I'll do it after breakfast

However, I'll lay a link in "unsigned" to make amends for my misplaced highball the other week

We had a muppet park his untaxed wreck outside our house ...{snip}}} In the end, some of the local joyriders nicked it and set fire to it elsewhere on the estate. Now, if the owner had been caught doing 35 in a 30............................................!!!!!!!!! How much did you pay them?

Although I do not tend to use the cruise control in my Accord, a mate of mine who is not quite so convinced of the insignificance of absolute speed (thanks to a plurality of fixed penalties hanging over him like a sword of Damocles), he uses his in his Merc. It is a more comprehensive cruise control...

I'd forgotten about Peter's principle  Ok - I'll give you that one, but won't use it myself thanks to incompXXXX insignificance

To amplify Paul's point, my father when he was alive and driving suffered from degenrative ey problems. If truth be known he could not have passed the statutory eyesight test for the last 20 years of his motoring life. however, he cut his cloth according to his capability. He stopped using fast road...

Not sure of "competence" in your Q1 response, Paul. How about "significance" Although I appreciate where you are coming from, I think your proposed response to Q3 is dichotometric to the basic message. Conditions, time of day etc must all play a part. The tables cannot show that. My reply - a...

Paul et al - a few thoughts here and a couple of questions. You say but we also have ongoing improvements in vehicle safety, road engineering safety and post accident medical care thought to be worth about a 7% reduction per annum when taken together Where do you get 7% from, or is it just a gut fee...

.. unless I get pipped. I am vintage 1957 - 47 years young. With my normal driving glasses on I got through only 8 full cycles from normal distance to big clock and back again in 10 secs. I repeated the expt with my bifocals - not ordinarily used for driving unless I forget - and did 10 1/2 cycles i...

There are some urban locations I have in mind where despite the obvious presence of junctions, shops, schools, houses, pubs, late-night takeaways etc. some [legitimate] drivers still think 50+ is an acceptable speed. In such circumstances a couple of speedo checks resulting in a reduction in speed ...

When I suggested a case for both VAS and Camera at the same place (or shortly after one another), I was in fact thinking of collecting crash evidence as opposed to issuing fines. I don't care if it's overt or covert either - the latter is likely better for the speedo reason. Further, as Peter points...

Agreed.

In fact I think there are cases for both vehicle activated signs AND speed cameras, the latter a few tens of car lengths after the former, at certain specific places. however, these places really are few and far between.

I'm very interested in the 25% or so who have so far voted for "a few cameras at special sites". Can any of you tell me why a camera would be superior to a vehicle activated sign "at a special site"? I honestly can't find a single logical reason. I just have to accelerate a little to make sure they...

A road I "know" well had between visits been modified to look similar to your drawing, though not quite so dramatically daft, where previously there was a give-way. It's a built up road, but this was late and I was on the main drag going towards "car B" in your drawing, doing, I guess, around 50 whe...

Good day one-and-all. Roger here, from Essex.

I am an insomniac and an informationaholic. I can be found lurking on several boards, including "unsigned", uk-traffic" - and now this one.

Looking forward to making more acquaintences.

Nice one, Paul

In our once quite rural village with a few "give-way" entrances onto the main road, we now have no fewer than four "white humps" in the middle of the road. In three cases, there is virtually no way to negotiate these "properly" if turning right without at least the rear o/s wheel riding over the hum...
