I suppose it's too much to hope that you will not have access to the internet when you have left work?

More like cutting off your nose to spite your face, from the sound of it.

Nobody *has* to smoke at work, and most workplaces have already banned it anyway before the new law.

You could always do what loads of other smokers (who show a bit of consideration for non smokers do ) ---go outside.

What a ridiculous statement. Was it a joke?

I suppose you'll be claiming the dole and clogging up the NHS...

After seeing an advert on tv about a group of people in a room breathing in black smoke i thought that was going too far, so i decided to make a complaint to the ASA (advertising standards agency), 1 week later got a letter back from them stating they had numerous complaints about the same advert so for now its been suspended.

i've never been prejudice towards anyones choices, drugs ,drinking habbits, smoking, I always thought after you reached the age of 21 you made up your own mind what you did, i have my moral scruples, and i believe somewhere in the region of 40,000 people die each day of hunger in third world countries and no one really cares about that.

What really worries me about the state of this country, and i really have to say this, (i hate my country more and more each day, when i see whats happening, our rights slowly but surely are being taken away)
I for 1 would love to get away from here i'had more than enough , sadly im stuck here, but i will fight back against this establishment which is rotten to the core

What i am afraid of is whos next on the list. YOU ?

Rant over :?

Is it ALL smoking, or just cigarettes?

I only ask because a former neighbour smokes fish and ham for top restaurants.... now based in Brighton!

How come they have not banned EVERYthing which might be injurious to health?

He (or she) won't be able to claim anything for the first 26 weeks, which is just as well because I loath my taxes supporting those who don't have a genuine reason for not contributing.

Speaking as an ex-smoker - Smokers already contribute more extra taxes than they will use in extra medical care, thus helping to fund the NHS, and at the same time drop dead 3 years or so earlier than average, so take 3 year's less state pension. So you could say that Smokers are doing everyone else a favour already.

What makes you think that smokers use 'extra' medical care? As I understand it smokers' lifetime healthcare costs are less than for non-smokers - and that seems certain - after all we're all going to get ill and die.

I don't get this. Is it because smokers die earlier? I would have thought this would be offset by the chronic effects of smoking ie long term without dying. eg bronchitis heart problems etc etc.

Yeah, I reckon because smokers die a little younger on average.

Many deadly diseases are 'chronic' - and we're all going to die of something or other.

I've read that 50% of all healthcare costs are incurred in the last year before death, and most people, whether smokers or not, tend to be ill with something for a period before dying rather than being well one day and dead the next.

Aren't statistics amazing?

Armed with that piece of information, if we could find out

(a) what the average lifetime healthcare costs per individual are, and
(b) how much cost we have personally incurred to date,

we'd be able to see if (b) has reached 50% of (a) yet, and therefore deduce whether we are going to die within the next year or not.

Which might be really interesting to know! :?

Sssh - JT- looking at the postcode lottery for certain drugs/treatment being curtailed for the obese etc - this lot might think that NHS payments are like a private scheme - after a certain level that's it .
