What with the risk of malicious code being installed onto my pc should I disable Javascript in my browser as I have been reading?

no - lots of sites make legitimate use of javascript and you'll be risking ruining your web browsing experience. install an anti virus, anti spyware and keep a firewall on, don't click on dubious links, don't download files from random emails and don't download .zip 'image' files!

JavaScript is a huge security risk, but you do risk sites not working without it!

Install Firefox (if you haven't already) and the NoScript extension, then you will be able to enable JS just for the sites that you trust.

I have Firefox and installed Noscript last night but even when I allow certain sites access it still asks me for permission for sites I have no idea about.
To be honest I found it a bit annoying.

Just give it a few days. I was the same the first time I installed noScript, but I couldn't live without it. And remember to get the new update today if you don't have it set on automatic :)
