Question for those in the know ,and perhaps some info for those wondering .
Today ,been having problems getting on line .Out of desperation ,shut down Zone alarm and switched on windows firewall - bingo .
Then tried Virgin Broadband faults and waited ....zzzzzzzzzzzzz:fastasleep:
No national faults ,no regional faults ,but hey presto -first question -"are you using Zone alarm " - it's causing problems on Virgin Broadband ---no further info -told to consult ZA site .

Anyone know what is the problem(my theory is its blocking a port that virgin use ,but which one ) ,or suggest a free decent firewall??

Known issue with the fix for the internet wide DNS problem.

Affects people with Zone Alarm who have their settings set to High

I got so tired of ZA I deleted it. Constantly asking for verifications I'd already taught it.

That's the one - Virgin only gave me a quick reply "go to the ZA site " - no mention of the update problem .But to give Virgin their due they've now got a message on the fault line directing people to the ZA update page .Typical knee jerk microsoft reaction -like with XP update 1A -all my office 2000 worked till then ,I had even found the update that caused the problem ,but it's now embedded in XP2 update ,so bye bye office 2000(which I prefered and used daily at work) and in with 2003

Used to use ZA....same problems.
To many sites became unavailable, and evn aol was shut out.
I now use pctools firewal plus. Free, and has a toolbar icon that shows data traffic.

56 years after it was decided it was needed, the Bedford Bypass is nearing completion. The last single carriageway length of it.We have the most photogenic mayor though, always being photographed doing nothing

Could you explain this a bit more. I use Xp Sp2 and Sp3 with Office 2000 and it seems to work OK.

First q - have you had any updates to windows recently ? Microsoft Update KB951748 is the one that causes the problem ,with Zone Alarm as Ometron said (http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/free/ ... Issue.html)

Once again Microsoft didn't just seal the gaps in the windows -they locked them shut
Like curing a car misfire by disconnecting the battery .

I have found that with Office 2000 and XP upgrades after xp1 ,(one particular upgrade in it ) that photodraw will not run -so (as I like it for maps etc) I have a dual boot disc -XP Pro /win 98 ,with a three partition disc.(XP/WIN98/DOS STORE )

I'd say it was a ZA fault. Microsoft fixed a big BIG security hole, ZA's response is to leave it open until we can fix our end.
