Anyone work out how those clever people at the A77 Safety Patrneship get a " 50% drop in fatalities after SPECS cameras introduced" from the following apparently random figures? (Figures from their own website.)

Year Fatalities
1996 - 1
1997 - 2
1998 - 3
1999 - 2
2000 - 3
2001 - 3
2002 - 3
2003 - 7
2004 - 5
2005 - 1
2006 - 3
2007 - 3
2008 - 3

What about the "seriously injured"s?

In which year were the cameras introduced? Comparing an average of 2005-07 with 2002-04 gives a 50% reduction.

Too good Peter. You should be on the partnership :)

They were introduced in July 2005. Take any other 3 year periods and you do not get any serious reduction. Also quite cute taking the 1 death in the whole of 2005 as after the SPECS although they were introduced in the middle of the year.

Steve I've got the figures for serious and they do appear to have dropped. They claim 39".

Apart from a "blip" in 2003-04 the pattern seems to be fairly constant. I was up there in June and would think that between Turnberry and Ayr the presence of the SPECS on the A77 encourages a lot of drivers to take the back roads.

When I asked for the figures, they sent me data with the years before2002 (years with fewer deaths clearly blacked out, I found them myself later). You do wonder what motivates to "prove " by deception.

Anyway on a similar subject the A77 upgrade, from a 4 lane deathtrap to dual carriageway, appears to have had a remarkable effect. This section is not covered by SPECS. A local hospital reported deaths down from 13 to nil! Funny how you instinctively believe the hospital figures but question anything coming out of the "Patrtnerships.
