56 years after it was decided it was needed, the Bedford Bypass is nearing completion. The last single carriageway length of it.We have the most photogenic mayor though, always being photographed doing nothing

Nonsense, it is an absolutely splendid investment.

Phase 1 will enable the government to keep track of my car at all times and ensure that I get lots of speeding tickets, and they'll be able to charge me large sums of money when I drive about on our increasingly dilapidated road system.

Phase 2 will be better still when I've been implanted with my own personalised identity chip, and then they will know where I am at all times and possibly levy further charges based on that knowledge.

I really can't see why you fail to recognise the immense potential of all this.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

And then it will extend to further implants using gaming technology so they can get feedback from my body. When they detect my bum going like a sewing machine I'll get another tax based on my style and longevity. :D

Well I'm very happy for you, but I do think that ought to be free of charge.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

If they can measure it they can (and likely will in due course) Tax it! Look at the history of Taxation!

(And indeed, a form of "Sex Tax" already does exist, for the purposes of tax credits/benefits/council tax you are deemed to be "No longer single" if you get to have more than a certain number of "Sleepovers" per week!)

I can see a major increase in tin foil 'paintwork' on cars. ;)

I cannot see the personal infringement being acceptable under any circumstances.

The Telegraph Bruno Waterfield, Brussels 4:50PM GMT 18 Jan 2011 wrote:
His suspension came on the same day that the European Commission demanded another £1.6 billion to complete the project, at an additional cost to the British taxpayer of £217 million despite Galileo already running hugely over budget and missing its completion date last year.

Antonio Tajani, the EU's industry commissioner, also revealed that the navigation system's annual operating costs of £672 million will be funded from the public purse, presenting a £91 million bill to Britain for running Galileo every year after 2014.

The cost of Galileo, billed as the EU's alternative to the US Global Positioning System, was initially put at £2.9 billion but is now estimated at almost £6bn.

The soaring costs will put the commission in conflict with Britain, which is leading a campaign by governments to bring EU spending in line with national austerity cuts.

I guess the EU who seem oblivious to our requirement to CUT costs assume that we grow money trees in the UK !
I hope they are told fair and square "NO".

Good to see this comment then :
The Telegraph Bruno Waterfield, Brussels 4:50PM GMT 18 Jan 2011 wrote:
A British government spokesman said: "It is definitely a No to extra funding. If the commission cannot do it with the fixed budget it should refocus the scope of what can be achieved."

I do not see how these schemes (or is it scams) can get so very out of control and yet the 'powers that be' seem to just assume that we will just swallow it all and pay up ! Lets hope that is stopped dead and told to return to there original costs or end altogether.
However, I wonder what we 'pay' already as a Nation for using the current satellites ?

Although I see that if this is mainly a French benefit project (and then everyone else is sold 'Country Benefits' - to help raise the funds), then why did this not be refused years ago? I seem to recall there being many question marks over it some years back but the former Gov seemed to just agree to everything - didn't it?

Unfotunately, reliance upon the US gps system in the future is unwise.
While, at the moment, the US is benign towards other users, this state
of affairs may well not last. All you have to do is look at the uses gps
and it's data is used for. If the EU does not establish Galileo then China
/India etc will. Just because the system is orbiting does not mean it
can be used.

I agree, we are already ploughing lots of money into devices which utilise a system that is wholly owned by the US Military, and can be turned off/encrypted by them at will, without consultation or even warning. When we are starting to talk of using the technology for instrument approaches to airfields, instead of traditional ground-aids, then we need to be certain of its continued availability and accuracy.

Interesting article at El Reg - FAA to pilots: Expect 'unreliable or unavailable' GPS signals

IMHO, there is far too much political and commercial posturing going on with Galileo - if the EU just "got on with the job", made it free and "open source" then we could all benefit from the money that we have already provided through our taxes, rather than lining the pockets of huge corporates!

Oh, and Merka wouldn't be able to hold us hostage at some point in the future ;)

The problem with the eu/galileo is not posturing, it is that the project should just have been given to a company/group_of companies and let them build to a protocol. Instead we get the euro_bureaucracy sticking their fingers in, and the insistence that this has to to to them, and that has to go to those....which has cost many billions so far, with just one sat to show.
The project, all such projects, will NEVER be entirely open, there will always be a high degree of control. The US uses gps to target things, so others will as well....and then there are the counter measures to block sat_sigs. Etc. The public can buy, or make, devices to block/jam gps sat_sigs......woe betide any country that insists upon embedded control systems in vehicles that are tied to gps, and capable of outside control. Just because a person is a criminal does not mean they are thick, or cannot afford to purchase the gear.
