While I agree with the majority of Teabelly's post, I do question the statement that if insurance was to become cheaper, then you would still have the same people driving without insurance. I hear a lot of middle aged people saying that with the cost of insurance today, that they can understand why younger people go without insurance...not condoning it maybe, but showing sympathy for the reasons.

I was hit by a guy on a moped about 30 years ago who luckily was insured at the time, a few months later he appeared in our local paper for driving without insurance and I have to wonder if this was due to raised costs as a result of his accident with me.

My views do not represent Safespeed but those of a driver who has driven for 39 yrs, in all conditions, at all times of the day & night on every type of road and covered well over a million miles, so knows a bit about what makes for safety on the road, what is really dangerous and needs to be observed when driving and quite frankly, the speedo is way down on my list of things to observe to negotiate Britain's roads safely, but I don't expect some fool who sits behind a desk all day to appreciate that.

Some of them will be uninsured due to the cost, I agree.

Perhaps the MID could be funded partly from National Insurance contributions too? It is supposedly £30 a year for every insured driver which suggests to me that the costs of uninsured driving can't be that bad and it is actually the cost of *insured* driving that is driving premiums ever higher and making more people decide it is too costly. Do insurance companies not get suspicious when the same people are involved in repeated claims?? Why have they voluntary handed out their claims management to accident management companies rather than doing it in-house as they used to do? The accident management companies and approved repairers seem to be in the game of writing off high performance cars and selling them on. I know plenty of people where their car has been a 'write off' and there is nowhere near as much damage or cost to repair as is being claimed by the people you are supposed to be able to trust. Car is then whisked off to a salvage yard before the owner can even object! I'd think this was also a factor but one which few in the media seem to have picked up on.

Really? I'm not disputing it, but I've never heard of this. If true, then it is only a matter of time before all the other companies follow suit.

I'm sure this is a consequence of mandatory payments of premiums to profit making businesses.

Their logic is that when you've had one accident you are more likely to have another. I checked with my broker and they said they didn't deal with companies that did that. It will be Admiral probably as they are owned by RBS who are cash strapped money grubbers. They're also notorious for particularly derisory pay outs. They offered someone I knew *half* the replacement value of their car because they'd seen a dodgy one on Autotrader in the same colour! The one on autotrader wasn't the same ltd edition. It was just in that colour. They got their full money in the end but they had to fight for it.

Would a national not for profit insurance company be the answer? It would provide competition to the profit chasers.
