Does anyone know if the hampshire SCP have yet started putting a mobile speed van on bassett avenue in southampton?

I had heard there were plans to do so, but never heard anything more... I for one can't see where on earth they could park the van!!

LOL! no, plenty of bushes, but no parking at all..it is a very narrow dual carriageway with pavement along its whole length.

Isn't Bassett Avenue a single carriageway with 2 lanes each direction?

Anyway, I have seen ANPR there but not a scamvan.

Yeah its a single carriageway sorry.... no laybys, bridges, its an exceptionally narrow piece of road. One of the SCP documents says it will be "used as a 15% site when enforcement sites have been identified".
Thats from Jan this year.

Southampton City Council, the highway authority, are considering reducing the 40mph speed limit from 40mph to 30mph for the whole of Bassett Avenue and the remaining 40 part of The Avenue. It would be safer to make the whole road fully S4 rather than wide-D2 on The Avenue.

hants satey cam website has a camera locator where all the camera sites are supposed to be, however... not all of them are... (hscp website)

the new camera on WEST QUAY ROAD is not on the map but they are covered in a blue bags (out side leasure world)

I think it is time that someone reminded Southampton that roads need to meet a criterea before reducing speed limits. thee are no houses schools down most of the avenue. The cyclists have the common and cycle paths. If you see a notice in the paper e-mail me.... I will complain...

The avenue is one of the major routes into and from Southampton. It should be widened a little into a full dual carriageway. And ideally a couple of the major junctions should have an underpass to seperate the traffic and improve the flow.

Reason is that most of the accidents are shunts caused by the congested traffic and the fact that the dual lanes are only in parts of the Avenue.

But the Council is the LibDem greens aka stalinista, sometimes in alliance with Labour, both of whom think that folk should be forced out of cars.

I agree that something needs doing. Make the whole thing at least S4 and give it a limit of 40mph on built up sections (as it has currently on the northern sections) and 50mph through Southampton Common. Raise the 30mph limit on the southern section, as it is D2/D3, with a bus lane northbound, plenty of signalised pedestrian crossings, it is well lit and has an off-road cycle path.

Somebody I know, a Londoner, suggested a flyover for the A35 Burgess Road junction.

Your chances of getting the avenue widened is less than nill. The common is a bit of ancent wood land a site of scientific interest. the road is lined by very old avenue of oak trees. there are ancient by laws that prevent you putting a fence on the common

They could re-construct the road to reduce the rediculous camber, they could tweek a few junctions but there is very little room there. Land is VERY EXPENSIVE. Six houses have been bought up on the avenue at £150k over market price and they are going to build 122 homes

If the M272 got the go-ahead and had a free-flowing junction with the M27 it could have taken a substantial amount of traffic off this route.

The road surface of The Avenue and the camber is appalling. The council tell me that a scheme to resurface this stretch of road must compete with resurfacing of other A-roads within the city (apparently only one scheme per year can be carried out due to the lack of funding from central government).
