London - January 30, 2006: John-Paul Flintoff, writing for The Times in Great Britain, reports that "ECO-VIGILANTES" have discover that letting the air out of tires might be the best, and safest way to fight the growing popularity of SUVs; safe, that is, from the threat of getting arrested for vandalism.

So the first time someone gets killed because of an under inflated tyre goes bang....... :o

Yes, I've been worrying about this this morning.

Times article: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0, ... 66,00.html

"Eco warriors find legal way to ground the 4x4 motorist"

Which, of course, is completely wrong. Letting down tyres is very likely to be criminal damage.

* Damage need not be permanent (Roe v Kingerlee 1986).

* Criminal damage can include permanent OR temporary impairment of value or usefulness (Morphitis v Salmon (1990) QBD)

letting down tyres IS permanent damage as the sidewalls are destroyed.

Yes. It is as much against the law as speeding is, I should have thought, although it might not be seen to be as dangerous, providing you let all four tyres down completely, and leave an explanation under the windshield wiper!

Except that one is a purely technical offence with no direct victim.

How about atempted murder!

Or manslaughter at least is comeone gets killed as a result.

You can imagine the scene, numb nuts eco twat starts to let a cars tyres down, gets disturbed so only does it half way and does not leave a note. Later on the driver get in his car and drives down the motorway.....bang spat. pile up, carnage.....nice one!

it must be illegal to promote this activity.

Gizmo,

sorry to be obvious, but i really don't think that 'safety engineer' meant letting tyres down as the victimless offence.

And it's not as if the organisation has not thought of one possible consequence --

“Our initial reaction was that it’s quite amusing, and clever to have established that they aren’t breaking the law. But if just one person needs to go to hospital in a hurry and their 4x4 has a flat tyre, the joke won’t seem so funny. The campaign will be finished.”

Fortunately I carry a tyre inflator in my 4x4 - and if I find someone playing with my tyres I know exactly what I will be doing with it

Asuming they know how dangerous it is then I would agree with attempted murder.
Also theft. (of air)

You admit to driving a 4 by 4!
Don't you realise you are solely responsible for all deaths on the road, all global warming, and, and ....... everything really.

Is this just in urban areas?

Our local doctors use 4x4's since the chances are they will get called to assist mountain rescue victims, or remote farms in Winter.
Even ordinary folk need to have full use of their vehicle at all times.
Now suppose I were late for work, can I sue for compensation?
I bet the potential penalty is better than criminal damage.

I would have thought they were guilty of trespass - these numpties that post flyers under your windscreen in supermarket car parks are technically guilty of trespass by tampering with property not belonging to them...just a thought.

Also, if they are committing these acts of vandalism as a form of protest, could I not kick his knackers into his pancreas and then cite my objection to him and explain my action in terms of making sure he could no longer produce little tree-huggers?

Always thought there was an offence of "interfering with a vehicle on the public highway" --- mind you in this part of the world with high numbers of tyres slashed and no one in the frame - one call and our eco coward could be assisting with enquiries.

Is it an offence to inflate your tyres with chlorine?

They eco-geeks obviously haven't learned that not so long agao a disgruntled cyclist was jailed for a year for puncturing car tyres just because a car splashed him.

Can't they spend their time planting trees or something?

maybe they could organise 'walk to school groups' each eco warrior could organise a group in their area and volunteer to walk kids to school thus taking practical steps to alleivate the school run.

Of course this is too much like hard work and clearly public spirited.

doesn't really fit in with their selfish, self promoting ideals.
