Did you try that place in Cov/Hinckley etc - i usually find that they will price match , and the fitters/managers are on the ball.

A recent issue of Auto Express (sorry, I have discarded it and don't remeber the date or issue) had a comprehensive tyre test. It included, wet and dry tests along with wear and noise ratings.

The winning tyre was the Vredestein Sportrac 3. If memory serves me correctly, the winner last year was the Sportrac 2.

I have not yet used the Vredestein tyre but am seriously considering them at my next change.

Currently I have Goodyear Eagle F1 DSG2 tyres and am very happy with their performance in all conditions.

I would second patdavies comments about maintaining the speed rating as recommended by the manufacturer, as a minimum.

Regards

Snert

I have new tyre, and thank you all for the advice.

I have noticed my fuel consumption has gone up ~2-4mpg.
would new tyres make consumption go up.
Or could the cold air be the source :scratchchin:

Snert - years ago i had a Mini( a proper one ,not the psuedo germanic things) and fitted a set of Vredesteins - grip was good, and when i got rid of the van, the tyres were still good - can't remember the miles done - but seem to remember i was pleasantly surprised.Didn't know if todays were the same ---looks like they are a good buy even today.

Yes - at least, I could believe 2MPG. That said, you'd need to do pretty accurate averages over a fair distance to be sure because the changes are pretty small and there could be many confounding factors. What did you go for in the end? Also, how many miles have you done on the new ones so far? I tend to find that most new tyres feel great until at least 500 (and preferably 1000) miles when they're fully "scrubbed-in".

Could this be the larger rolling circumference of new tyres affecting the odometer?

Could be, The pressures where lower, so I pumped them up.
still same fuel consumption. How much larger would the rolling circumference be going from about 2mm to 8mm?

We'd need the tyre size to work out a fair approximation.

I got pirelli P7000., done about 400 miles.

45R17.does this include the 8mm of tread or not.

I am ashamed to say I have alot of interest in tyres and their effects, on the car.It confuses me how some do not see them as important, As they are the most important part of the car.

We also need the width to calculate the sidewall height from the aspect ratio.

Radius new = (215*.45) + (17/2 * 25.4) = 312.65

Radius old = 312.65-6 = 306.65

Circ new = 1964.4mm

Circ old = 1926.7mm

Ratio new/old = 1: 1.01956

=> 2% 'longer' when new.

Not sure we can make those calculations accurately enough in this case. Although the "nominal" size will be the same, different brands of tyre do seem to fluctuate noticeably despite being the same "size". We used to fit 225/50 tyres from a particular manufacturer and were surprised to see 225/50s from a different one fouling the wheelarches! Also, the sidewall stiffness (and thus rolling radius) varies from one manufacturer to the other.

At least we have established an approximate figure for the difference from new to old for particular tyres. My feeling is that the approximation will be a good one because not much else changes as the tyre wears.

but hadn't he changed manufacturer? I agree though, that on the same tyre, it will get smaller as it wears by about the amount you calculate.
