Your colleagues smoking in the cab would be an offence then, and the employer would also be committing an offence if knowing and tolerating the action.

Sounds more like you work with some inconsiderate/lazy people, who happen to smoke. Let's not be prejudiced and tar all smokers with the same brush.

This evening I went for a run and saw smokers just chucking their fag ends on the floor. Why can't these lazy b*st*rds take their littler home with them, instead of just chucking it on the floor?

Let's tax crisps too, and Mars bars! Again, a lot of people are willing to drop litter, the fact that some of them smoke means fag butts get dropped. Personally I stub them out thoroughly on the sole of my shoe and put them in the nearest bin.

While I do not condone it, it should be noted that a dropped fag butt will fall apart and wash away due to the weather far more quickly than other litter.

There is a new product that the NHS is trailing and is proving very successful - kills MRSA and Clostridium difficile !
Cheaper than bleach too !

Allergy's are different to a habit that is followed. One does eat or so things that tend to aggravate an allergy. People still overeat yet we know it is not ideal for us. I feel sensitive about smoking for obvious reasons, but people have to surely make their own choices. Paul and I firmly believe this. We have to be responsible for our own lives. I have only ever had one puff of one ciggy to try it and I recoiled in disgust for how it made my lungs feel alone ! However those that got hooked when young, cannot make a well informed decision and are addicted. Someone who is addicted has to change habits, make a firm decision to commit to try to never smoke for the rest of their lives. It is like drugs generally from that aspect (alone). Paul worked out all sorts of mathematical processes to try and reduce consumption. I made a note book of each ciggy to help show him how much he actually smoked and so as he reduced the overall success - that worked for a while until some pressures reemerged then it all failed again. he knew he had to stop. The hospital said if you don't we won't bother to operate. As it was I fear they left him for SO long because they knew he struggled to slow and stop but he was making progress and they recognise it is best done gradually and then a stop. It was very tough for him as we were also trying to loose weight too. Life's stresses can make people want a vice and then it becomes a crutch for life. I am so pleased that I never got to like or accept it.
A very hard thing to do from all that I have ever seen. Like most things there is info for and against health issues.
I know Paul died from artery blockage thought to be from smoking, but I have no concrete proof than simply what we were told. We knew his arteries were bad and he needed a big life threatening operation. He was doing all he could to stop he finally chose a date Jan 1st 08.~
I can say that I detest the smoke even and have got extremely sensitive to it, and especially without a window open providing fresh air - or extraction that removes the smoke.

Used to be one a few years ago ,before PC and external contracting became rife in hospitals -something called a Matron .Often wonder if they still ruled the roost ,would all these bacteria survive :D

On the smoking front -I tried several times -unsuccesfully .Then finally I managed .Likewise my daughter .I am of the opinion that it's a combination of factors that enables you to stop .All the patches etc in the world won't help if it's not the right time .

The problem is not lack of cleanliness.
The bacteria are resistant to many of the antibiotics used today.
They [bacteria] are also found on the majority of people, usually in the nose or throat.
The BACTERIA is not the problem, the problem is the treatment.
You can clean a room from floor to ceiling with bleach, the moment you let a person in the cleaning goes out the door !
Funnily enough, a patients visitors are more likely to infect the person.
I see the visitors ignoring limits set for them every day...2-to-a-bed...ignored...seen 8 people around a bed frequently...and don't-sit-on-the-bed ?....ignored...one person tried to bring the guys dog into the hospital....kids ?...running everywhere.
The problem could be dramatically reduced by banning visitors.
Kiss the patient goodbye ?
Right....nose and throat remember....

That's why I posed the solution of ye oldefashioned strait laced Matron ,more like an old Sgt Major who viewed the rules as set in stone .

Mum often speaks of Pat Dogs, I think they are called. Not sure if it a charity or what, but there is a group of people that have dogs especially for patients to pat, they need to be a decent sized dog, so people can reach them. I'm told it really perks patients up when the Pat Dogs come in. Don't see why a dog would have any more bacteria on it than a person would.

Sadly even the best Marton and the best cleaning routines cannot kill mrsa etc but this patented product is passing all clinical trials etc sadly it is a lengthy process.
