That is true if the linear velocity is held constant as you shorten the string. If you maintain the same angular velocity the force decreases.
Centripetal force Fc = m * v^2 /r . But v = w * r (w is meant to be omega - angular velocity). So Fc = m * r * w^2.
Fc is provided by the tension in the string and felt by your hand.

That is just another statement of the fact that, at the same speed, the tighter the corner the more likely you are to skid.
