It's a political 'grand design' and as such so much 'sexier' than grafting away to improve the transport network, yard by yard, mile by mile.

Yes, it's a classic "jam tomorrow" policy which allows them to duck out of doing anything much to improve things today.

As we have discussed before, nobody seriously disputes that healthcare or education should be improved (although people disagree on the means and the definition). There is no such consensus on transport - many people genuinely believe that too much transport, especially when done in a car or an aeroplane, is a bad thing.

It may well be a grand political design:

http://www.transport-pricing.net/

http://www.ertico.com/en/news_and_events/ertico_newsroom/towards_a_framework_for_european_road_pricing_workshop_gathers_key_stakeholders.htm

http://store.eiu.com/index.asp?layout=pr_story&press_id=1520001952&ref=pr_list

I could go-on for pages and pages.
Don't forget, the people can be brought to the correct way of thinking, it just takes time.
This idea (road pricing) is VERY heavily researched, politically AND industrially.

Read THIS one...did you know that "distance charging" of trucks was already operating in Europe ?

:gatso2: Unless I've missed something, reading through all these posts. There's one very important issue and indeed an matter integral to this site. SPEED CAMERAS. If this system has functions that enable vehicles to be tracked and speed carefully monitored, then wouldn't that mean that speed cameras would no longer be needed, or at least in a limited way in tunnels and underpasses etc?

Before everyone starts cheering and welcoming this ridiculous, intrusive road-pricing nonsense, remember that speed cameras may still be used-anything to get that extra bit of cash out of us! Where would that leave all the scamera pratnerships? I don't believe they'll just curl up and die. They'll possibly re-invent themselves to enforce road-pricing.

I'm sure it was!

Hate to be a conspiracist, but since the site is in beta, the operators can 'crash' it whenever they like, and take no responsibility for the lost 'signatures' in the interim.

Since the site only presents the past 500 signatures for inspection, and this petition is so fast-moving, there is no way for anyone who has signed recently to be sure their opinion has been registered.

Isn't there a "view all signatories" button? Mind you, with that many signatories the download would ping a lot of bandwidth with cheese ;-)

Nope!

Unless I am blind. Mind you, I prefer the explanation that my mind is finely honed for ignoring irrelevant stuff, and as such it may not have registered :P

Fear not Mon Chappel.....it is repeated over the next two days AND is available on cable "teleport replay" if you have it, anytime, at your convenience. :)

:x I just heard!...It seems that a PC Richard Eccles of the "North Wales" police has been "reprimanded" for encouraging officers to vote in the campaign!...........

Since when did Police Officers have less rights in society than the general public?.... :x

There is a "View all signatories" button available until the point that the programmers have decided is impractical. IOW, once a petition goes over a certain size, the button is removed.

The study estimates that it would also cost around £100 to fit the devices and warns that foreign cars entering the country would also be required to sign up for a temporary account and have the necessary hardware installed.

Well that's a good way to kill off tourism.

Is the Gov't getting worried - radio news article yesterday said that TB was going to reply to every one that voted.--is he trying to change minds, or just tells us that he intends to ignore us anyway.
But then if they go ahead with it - says a lot for the technology, when they can't filter out people who vote twice.(or was that part of their thinking,so that they could ignore votes)

I'm fairly sure that requiring foreigh vehicles to have kit fitted is against Euro-legislation. Vehicles registered in one EU country are deemed to be for for use in ALL EU countries with the only exception being that rhd headlights must be adapted to not-dazzle in lhd countries.
The EU Charter allows free movement of assets, including motor vehicles, across EU borders without any artificial barriers to their movement nor further taxation from that levied in their home countries.
