Relative carnage? As in the German Autobahns having HALF the fatality rate of the Belgian and Austrian Motorways perhaps?

Why do you only refer to Motorways, and more importantly, why did you specifically pick Belgium and Austria? We don't live there.

What's the fatalitiy rate of the Autobahn (derestricted sections) like compared to the UK?

Actually - the Mad Cats and self stand more chance of staying alive on the derestricted sections than the limited ones around the Rhine basin

Austria does have that many problems on its A/bahn. In fact no recorded carnage on its 100 mph stretch reported so far. In fact the Swiss hooligan element read they are thinking of extending this.

:yikes:

Oh - and Austria and Germany invented all things "green in politics and extra taxes" in the firist place  - having had "pay as you throw! and fines for using the wrong kind of bin for years now.

:scratchchin: Some things they do catch on then?

But said umpteen times before - we need to instil a pride in driving skills and ensure that COAST led skills are promoted from the start - and perhaps we should bring in some form of occasional assessement - but make sure there are appropriate rewards such as a refund of any fee for a really excellent drive. Tis always carrot and stick if we want to motivate people towards self development

Just whacking up a speed camera and pretending it saves thousands of lives nationwide just does not work. Even Steve acknowledges what has always been known here: dangerous drivers will manipulate these devices. They cannot really do so when confronted by a real police officer who will always use his professional judgement - and stamp hard on stupidity but will give friendly advice to all copped - even just letting off blippers with a verbal flea in ear if appropriate.

Back to topic:

As for fumes - another peer reviewed piece suggested that the peak CO2 emission times stemmed from queues of crawling vehicles. This was highlighted in last week's National Walk or Cycle or Bus to School Week which was aimed at getting mumpties off the school run

In fact you could reduce fatalities to almost zero quite easily by hard limiting all vehicles to 10mph.

Wouldn't it be more profitable (not just monetary) to improve driver skills rather than just keep dumbing things down?

What was the outcome of this complaint? The reason I ask is that I saw what is presumably the same advert on telly last night and thought it was misleading and should be complained about.

Didn't an insurance company recently release a report saying that 80% of accidents happen at below 5mph?

Christ! We'd better make the speed limit considerably below 5mph then!

Rather a sweeping statement, Biggles. Could you back it up with some evidence?
