Hmmm..a 170 micro-henry inductor across the collectors of a darlington pair driven at 30 khz....
An interesting device....but not something for nothing....I expect there are many in portable devices in smaller configs.

56 years after it was decided it was needed, the Bedford Bypass is nearing completion. The last single carriageway length of it.We have the most photogenic mayor though, always being photographed doing nothing

Thanks peeps. :)

I haven't looked at it since cuz we've had the weekend and I'm on a course this week but it looked like a stand alone component, more or less, without inductors or 'heavy' external components.

I should probably have looked into it in more detail first but me, and Kev at work, were just wondering if anyone else had used them with good or bad results.

Not all chips are equal, I used to get some ridiculous results with the old 555 sometimes even when I followed it to the book. :(

When I worked at Eddystone Radio there were many PCBs which ended up in a disused swimming pool after successive engineers couldn't get the thing to work.

What is the part number and how much current are you needing?

You can use a 555 in a switching regulator http://www.edn.com/article/491285-Use_a_555_timer_as_a_switch_mode_power_supply.php

Or, if the current requirement isn't too high you could consider a ready to go dc-dc convertor

Err.. I can't remember now  I've just got back from the start of the course I'm on, (17th Edition plus Part 'P'), and my brain is frazzled. I'll know next Monday when I'm back at work and look at the notes. :stupidme:

Yes, memories of using so many nice cct’s but these days everything is so modular the people ‘back then’ have almost been made redundant. I remember trying to find the fault on a TV in an exam and got quite close but what they had done was to change the ferrite bead in a choke for wood and painted it black. I didn’t get it in time but it made you a better technician for the experience I believe, and think outside the box in many other ways. :)

Today you would just throw the TV out and buy a new one, myself included, because they are designed not to be user serviceable. I suppose it's progress but TBH I still long for those days sometimes... :cloud9:

Indeed. Finding that ferrite beads had been replaced by by black painted wood was far and away the most common fault when I was repairing televisions. :D
