Are you saying that its only motorists in the UK that find it irritating, or that in other countries the stop lights don't stay on when the vehicle is statonary?

This was an '02 plate E240, hired for the weekend so no idea if it was supposed to have an alarm or not, but the first time I drove off I just assumed there wasn't a separate parking brake at all (first time in an auto, I thought P took care of that...) given the lack of anything remotely handbrake-like. Got a few hundred yards down the road without any obvious lack of acceleration, then wondered why the brake warning light was on... So yeah, even in one of the smaller engined E's, the parking brake is no match for the engine torque if you give it a few extra revs.

the former. It's pretty much standard practice everywhere else I've been and I'd never heard anybody complain about it until I got here.
