Hi My name is Davey, I found this site through a link put in a post on www.onlinetruckers.co.uk I'm an Ex Truck Driver who started my own business after designing a timing device to help drivers stay legal within the complicated drivers hours regs.

I spend a lot of time trawling websites looking for decent forums and must admit I'm impressed here, and no doubt will end up being a regular user

I disagree with the Points policy as it currently stands as Joe Bloggs who works 9 - 5 in a factory can recieve 3 penalty points for going just over the speed limit travelling something like 12,000 miles per year, and as its a 3 year system is very unfair to the likes of Truck drivers who travel nearer 120,000 miles per year.

I think its time that annual milage was considered before issuing points.

Hi all
I am ken from sw london.
Only heard about this site due to the protest on the m4.
I have been driving for 15 years.and no accidents.other than a drink/drive accident.that I had last year.
I was arrested (and treated fairly) but they could not get a reading from the blood test.they said my blood had congeiled.I was let go from the police station 30 mins from being arrested for d/d.(accident due to arguing with the wife).
I do not drive a private vehicle.but do drive for a living.

G'day everyone.

My name's Paul and like Ken (above) I discovered the site through the M4 protest.

I'm in Hertfordshire, a pilot (so get my speed kicks at work, 450+mph is good enough for me) yet still drive a sporty car. Also an ex-biker.

My patience began wearing thin a couple of years ago courtesy of a talivan. Usual story, hidden in a lay-by just outside Luton where the dual carriageway in open countryside stepped up from :40: to :nsl:. Open road, no traffic, everyone accelerates as they approach the :nsl: and spot the van too late.

I'm not against cameras per se. I'd like to see them at every set of :trafficlight: to catch the red light jumpers and outside all schools. What really boils my piss is the sneaky way they are being indiscriminately used to raise revenue and reduce the number of walking, talking, thinking coppers who might also nab the uninsured, untaxed, drunk, drugged, etc, ETC!! ETC!!!!! (goes off into rant mode, foams at mouth, kicks furniture, pulls own hair and is escorted from the forum by a nurse in a crisp white linen uniform who whispers "There, there")

Hi I'm Darren, a 26 yr old Software Developer from rural Cambridgeshire. I'm a huge car enthusiast and own three cars (2 sporty cars and one mundane family car).

I enjoy track days and airfield days but in my 9 year driving career I've also averaged 20-30,000 miles a year due to my love of cars and driving. Whilst covering these miles, I have seen my fair share of both good and bad drivers on the road. I've also got 3 points for a 9 mph speed infringement whilst travelling at what I (and other motorists I was following) considered to be a safe speed for the conditions.

I remember at the beginning of my relatively short driving career there were definitely more police presence on the road and relatively few speed (sorry, Safety) cameras on the roads. Like many, I'm not against speed cameras per se but am becoming increasingly concerned at the way in which there are implemented and the blatant lies coming from safety partnerships when delivering their propaganda. I'm no longer prepared to sit down and give in to all this.

The whole speed camera and road safety topic is one I hold close to my heart and I could bore anyone to death for hours with my views and theories on these matters. As a nation we seem to take too many things lying down without taking a stand. Whilst I'm not suggesting the French are right for protesting about everything at the drop of the hat, I think we should move somewhere in between where we are now and where they are. For this reason, and the others mentioned above, it was with great pleasure that I participated in the M4 Protest today and enjoyed doing my bit helping dish out leaflets and sticky tape to those in attendance.

Some people on here may know me as the webmaster of my web site www.barryboys.co.uk that pokes fun at 'boy racers' and others may have seen my other rather basic 15 minute creation of a website www.youcantdrive.co.uk which is a lighthearted tongue in cheek look at some of the drivers on our roads. Whilst both these sites are a little radical and shouldn't be taken too seriously, they are the product of my love of cars, motoring and my concerns about road safety - something I don't believe safety cameras provide a positive input into.

You probably know my name already. I work for a Primary Care Trust in the NHS. I'm in Public Health which is all about monitoring, protecting and improving the health of populations.

I love cars and swift ones in particular although if I could walk to work I would... I do about 15-20,000 miles a year on a wide variety of roads. The current fantasy is a classic 80's Audi Quattro Sport, but it changes every week

I take pride in my driving although wouldn't for a minute call myself a 'good' driver. I do have off days/moments. I want to improve and have been toying with joining the IAM for a while. I became interested in this site when I was wrongly accused of speeding by some village volunteers with an uncalibrated amateur hair dryer in their sweaty palms. I care a great deal about the health and safety of the population (I've dedicated my career to it) and was subsequently branded a criminal. Thanks. :(

I think Safe Speed is an important site. It supports all the things that are crucial to road safety, patience, maturity, empathy, technical proficiency, self awareness etc but campaigns against the plainly unfair and ignorant. I just fear that promoting the above qualities would require the spending of public money rather than the revenue raising current system. -Which at time of writing is of course failing.
:?

that second link (youcantdrive) has an error on the front page. you mention HGV drivers but the pictures next to it are not HGVs. they are 7.5 Tonners which do not require an HGV licence

Well spotted!

YouCantDrive hasn't been updated since I put it up several years ago and I'm aware of the errors on the page, I ripped out links to a forum that used to be on there that just got trolled to death.

The image next to the HGV section was changed after the original images (of proper HGVs) were removed after a complaint from the driving school who claimed they belonged to him and he didn't wish to be associated with bad drivers! The replacement image was just the first suitably sized image I found on google image search!

Barryboys and my reading of other car forums takes up most of my internet time now, and until someone mentioned it a month or so ago on another forum, I didn't realise people still visited YCD and I was intending to let the domain name lapse. It really was just a 1/2 hour web site effort one night when I felt like a bit of a rant. Barryboys was similarly a 1/2 hour web site (conceived after a bottle and half of wine and a giggle at a few max power morons), but that site took off in a big way and therefore continues to be maintained by myself.

Hi all,

Trafpol with 15 years in, included extended sessions working in South Africa and Canada.

Detest revenue cameras for three main reasons -
1. Allows people to get away with bad driving, defective vehicles, etc,
2. Has been used as good excuse to divert funds from proper policing
3. The use of partnerships is getting dangerously close to erroding the whole concept of consent based policing and the officers on the ground are getting the flack for it.

Hi,

My name's Clare and I have been an active member of a number of car forums over the last few years. I have always had an interest in cars and really enjoy trackdays, but my ultimate passion is the Nurburgring. My partner and I are trying to go every month this season from March to November and he has his Porsche 944 turbo stored over there.

I currently drive a Clio Renault Sport 172 CUP. It is an awesome little car that really does what it was designed to do very well. It is very lightweight, if a little basic :)

I have never been caught by any sort of speeding device which is surprising as I live in Northampton ;) Not very car friendly town. I do have 3 points tho - how I got them is your guess ;)

I generally hate speed cameras. An example of how innappropriately they are used is this:

I drive along the A45 in Northampton every day. There is a huge college on a stretch of dual carriageway with a 40 limit. I have never seen a camera van there - until last week which was HALF TERM. So, was the camera there for safety reasons? I don't think so! It's this type of stuff that gets my back up.

I also have a major interest in the proposed road charging system. My partner who pays my mrtgage and the majority of our bills, works in Hemel Hempstead. He earns relatively good money and living in Northampton, it means we can buy a better house than we could in Herts. Road charging would cost us a fortune and have a serious detrimental effect on our standard of living. It would cost him nearly as much as he earns for him to get to work. Ridiculous eh?

Anyway, thanks for listening.

Clare

My name is Gareth, and I'm a car driver and I've never been caught speeding.

I've been reading the safespeed site on and off for the past few years, after finding it from Paul's posts on pistonheads.

Almost two years ago I got a new job that meant instead of driving around 100 miles a week it was suddenly between 600 and 1200 miles a week (to and from the office mostly, it is 100 miles each way between home and work). It only took a couple of close calls for me to radically change my attitude to driving and become properly interested in road safety. Unfortunately this didn't stop someone driving into the back of me at approx 50mph whilst I was stationary waiting for an ambulance with flashing blue lights on.

Yesterday I finally got around to registering and buying a years membership. I expect I'll be here for years to come.

You all know me any way - am Mad Doc's wife - Vrenchen. (sound a bit like "engine purr " 8-) ). if pronounced correctly ...

Am known in family as Wildy :neko: Ist because I fell out of my pram whilst trying to reach the brake to make pram go faster ... :o Und allegedly fell on my head which  :( some are very unkind about.

Also have 9 lives... always in trouble at school und mit my Papa - especially when I went on bobsleigh - illegally. aged 14 years,... it was feeling the speed !

Was brought up in village called Wildhaus in Appenzell Kanton.... und have always been passionate about driving cars. Papa was amateur und semi-professional rally driver.

I h ad serious no fault crash...was not nice - it hurt a lot for longest time afterwards. (even then tinkered to make a wheelchair go faster ...  Now walk normally without a limp und can walk and ride within reason..... und :yikes: have kittens too ....) .but IG und family got me driving again und I did all my tests again - RoSPA/RoADA und passed them all mit goldy grades (just to show off  ) .. und I drive safely und apply COAST at all time as this ist way to avoid accident - und speed take care of self if you always drive at speed at which you are arware of limit point at all time and can stop smoothly in comfort without waking baby kitten in back or even having passneger aware of braking as such in distance you can see to be clear.

Und I do not use Handys or eat apple whilst driving my car either.

Hello all,
I am new to this site and what Ive seen so far it is quite a forum for lively discussion. I live in the North west and prior to my present employment I was a class 1 LGV driver for 12yrs. I had a change of career 16yrs ago and now I am a current serving traffic officer with an obvious interest in driving and all aspects of road safety. With a dislike for speed cameras unless appropriately placed,I also am heavily involved with the IAM and charity Brake.

I should introduce myself, I suppose.

I work in the motorway management business; signs and signals and all that. It's surprisingly complex, and there's a lot of it.

As a result, I get to do quite a lot of motorway driving, both to and from the various sites I work on, and also to go out and peer at things. I am allowed to stop on the motorway, but have not yet abused it to go for a wee behind a matrix sign.

Cameras are, in my opinion, being used as both a mechanism for reducing police headcount and also to introduce a method of revenue generation that could be better implemented by a penny on income tax.

I firmly support the presence of trafpol on the highways and byways, and am also trying to generate both the time and the motivation to do my IAM.

I'm ben. 27, 9 years NCB and a clean licence. I've not yet been done for speeding and in the past would've kind of appreciated what that eurostar chap said about roadside cameras being easy to spot (evan in the days of battleship grey) if you're an observant driver- they're a danger like any other and if you're gonna drive fast you should have good observation... that said I feel PCN tax of all types has reached a ridiculous level whereby the power we [the public] allow lawmakers to have over us is being abused.

Basically I see whats being done as no different from those "rogue traders" programs I'm sure we've all seen, it's nothing more than two bit exhortion but on a massive scale and if you don't conform and pay the racketeers you have the police and courts to deal with.

For instance, I drive into Kens Kongestion Katastrophy to do a job, have busy day, get home at 7 or 8, mates are on the phone "come to the pub", eat/shower, race to pub, club, before you know it's 2am and I've been fined £100 for missing the payment by a few hours. Same with parking, I forget how many times I've been up to neck in trying to solve a problem, forgotten about the meter, arrived at it to find a ticket issued at 1 minute over. I'm not trying to "evade" [the preferred newspeak terminology] paying, I'm just someone trying to do a job, and stay on the right side of the law. My only crime is slightly sloppy time managment. all of which of course makes me an ideal target for PCN tax.

I know this site is more geared towards the speeding chapter of the racket but I think we're all speaking the same language.

then my van gets broken into and tools stolen and the police tell me to f&!k off, they're not intrested.

I could do what they're doing. I could work for a call out concern earning £2-3k a week ripping off people "completely legally". Thats a fact, I worked briefly for such an organisation and know how they work. But theres this little thing.... a sense of morality? decency? I guess thats a mental disorder these days. maybe I should see my GP and see if there's a drug I can take for it.

Strikes me trying to be a decent law abiding citizen is a dumb choice today.

hi my name is John mackay and an old bugger at that well not too old- from cleveland.I must say I do not object to speed cameras if they are placed in a genuine acc/black spot but in the majority case's they are not, just money spinners.eg I live on a busy road into the estate (surbiton road) this what has happened in the last 25 years since living here. 1 child killed ,2 injured, 1 garage nearly demolished by a speeding car, my next door neighbour wall knocked down twice , neighbour opposit fence knocked down twice ,2 head on collision, car hit a parked car. main road(bishopton road west) where the mobil speed camera is based from time to time 1 accident to my knowledge??.I've emailed the partnership about this and all I got was this they have no record of this.. you have I said I've just given you it.surely they can check this out. all I was asking was them to come and place a spe/cam,I told them this is not about safety at all just to raise cash and all I heard speed kills blah blah blah :?
