I have been thinking recently about a subtle shift in the message we are getting form the PTB (powers-that-be) on law and order.

What concerns me is that the potential victims seem to be being made culpable in a crime by not taking the “necessary” crime prevention measures.

One case in point is a radio advert/message that was broadcast in the Leicester area from a crime prevention unit. I was in the spring of this year and it was advising that home owners should keep all the doors and windows locked at all times even if they are in the house! Not very practical in the middle of summer, not to mention when you are going in and out doing the gardening etc. The inference was that if you didn’t you were being in some way negligent. What would happen if it should come to an insurance claim? We have all heard of barking mad judges that have made rape victims partly responsible for crime by virtue of the way they dressed.

The same applies to car theft. If you don’t invest in the latest advanced vehicle security then it is then your fault if your car gets stolen.

I admit it is daft not to lock you car but what is an acceptable level of diligence we should apply to protecting our property.

After all that is the job of the Police isn’t it?

I also find it ironic that the level of inherent security that new cars have has made them virtually impossible to steel without the key which will have greatly reduced the number of cars taken by joy riders. But the Police in Leicester have taken sole credit for the reduction in the number of cars stolen in the area….pat on the back, I don’t think so.

Back to my original point though, Victims are victims, crooks are crooks. When are we going to get back to this principal. I find this change in emphasis away from the police preventing crime to the public preventing crime very worrying. How far will this go?

"Crime, together we can crack it" should read "A problem shared is a buck passed"..


A may come across as having a downer on the Police but to date my exposure has been mainly negative. They have been sucked into the world of Politics and spin....

Not such a bad idea. Maybe (hopefully) at some point TPTB willget round to saying that we should also bear responsibility if we walk out into the road without looking.
