I'm likely to be starting a new job next year so I'll be handing the C4 back and will be buying my own, I'm looking for something practical (so no saloons) have had an Octavia and a Xsara estate (both diesel) and liked both.

I have a budget of 8-10K

Any recomendations as to good drives in that size/class???

The Seats are supposed to be the sporty ones so they're always being recommended. An alfa 147 would put a smile on your face but a large dent in your wallet when it broke down!

There are a few new vauxhall diesels around that aren't much more than that if you find a good trade place. My dad was quoted 12k for a 6 month old vectra with a 187bhp diesel. I suspect you'd get a 12-18month old one for your budget.

The citroen C5s are also dirt cheap - probably because they're french and too complicated. You'd probably find one of 3 years old going for even less than an omega. There are a few on autotrader for 3 to 4k for the hdi 110. Boot is enormous on them and I think the seats fold down so it is practical. The estates are massive.

Diesel Saab estates are good value second hand if you don't mind FWD - but go for the 1.9 TDi NOT the 2.2 - it's better in all respects

really , I would have thought the size would be more of a problem.

There is the 156 sports wagon, they have highly reguarded deisel units. you could get a 54 plate.
