these neon lights that seem to come in an assortment of colours(most commonly blue) that fit to the washer jets, exhausts, radiator grilles, tyres and underside of the car. Are any of them actually legal?

I don't know if they are legal, but they sure are useful. I give plenty of extra room to such vehicles. Same goes for any vehicle with something dangling from the driving mirror.

I found this on a Police Specials forum where they were asking the same thing.

The upshot was the law was not clear particulaly relating to the blue lights that are popular. They can be mistaken for emergency vehicles (!) but someone made the valid comment that they were not flashing.

I was into the custom car scene in the 70s. we used to wire the brake lighs to a secondary fog light at eye level. I know of a few guys that got busted for them. now they are standard equipment... :?

The copper has got to be pretty bored to stop you for having them..but then again it happens.... :!:

I looked into this recently. It is illegal to have any light facing rearward unless it is red, or an indicator/reverse light. It is also illegal to have a red light facing forwards.

However, it is legal to have a forward/sideways facing light of a colour other than red, provided it doesn't flash, or dazzle other road users.
