By virtue of the wording in the treaty. Very astute Norwegians and Swiss rejected EU membership via referenda on that and other issues/

It seems to me that our electorate was seriously misled at the time we joined in 1973 (I think it was) in so far as all the talk was of us joining the European Economic Community (EEC) - popularly known as the Common Market - at that time.

In other words we thought we were merely joining a trading organisation, and somehow the media didn't seem to bring out the fact that the Treaty of Rome (dating back to about 1958 I think) incorporated serious long term political ambitions, which for some time now have been all too clear.

Since then, of course, we have moved from being in the EEC to being in the European Community (EC), dropping the pretence of it being simply a trading group, and more recently it has become the European Union (EU) which is worse still.

I've no idea what the strength of popular feeling may be amongst the electorates of other member states, but I'm hoping that at some point - preferably quite soon - the people will turn against the empire building politicians and clip their wings quite severely. It is long overdue.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

WHO says it is powerful?

When the French refused to let in British beef because of the BSE scare, and were then ORDERED to let it in by the EC, they refused.
When the EC FINED them for refusing, they STILL refused, AND refused to pay the fine - and have not paid it YET!! :x

It is NOT powerful - they have NO means of enforcing anything, other than witholding funding from offending states. Since they rely on money going INTO the EC from offending countries, this is NOT the punishment it might appear.

France also sidestepped rules over National Airline ownership, and subsidised Air France... with impunity!

POWERFUL? No we have a weak crap government(s) which just keeps GIVING IN without a fight

Similar idea to the Neighbourhood watch idea and slogan - can't remember it - something like " crime cannot exist when good people look out " ---or " crime exists when not oposed by good people " -- in other words the EU only get away with it because the British Government ( and ultimately the British people ) do nothing abouit it .
(Not suggesting that the unelected EU mob are criminals :? )
