OK .. so I consumed 4,000 calories in my turkey and plum pud intake - not counting the Weinhexen I drank.. and the beer whilst I watched telly all evening with my family

They tell me that this will not change my "lean muscle mass" Phew!

They tell me booze reacts more when I am testoerone charged after exercise and warn against that glass of Mulled wine.

Um.. Alice and the Swiss let it simmer and thus evaporated off all the alcohol. Their version of this seasonal drink? Have to hand it them... splendid each time I've partaken.

Howeve, CW offers a tip for abstenance and I think worthy of discussion

Quote:

If you insist on being teetotal - the best excuse is to say you are driving a car. This answer is far more respected and believable than saying you are preparing for a bike ride.

Said with a martyr like expression, your host will feel sorry for you and offer a soft drink rahter than spending all night telling you one drinky will not hurt and what's so important about a bike race anyway

Um.. the thrill of winning .. of riding.. of competing.. for starts

But I suppose what I think I should be asking is

Why do we think we cannot have a good time unless we have a drink or two?

I have put this here as it's more a Chat issue than a cycling one ..

I would hope Jub Jub joins in and I still would like to hear about his rides, commutes and training

I have been "TeeTotal" for just over two years, prior to that was a very light drinker of the occasional wine for about 8 years. Pior to that I was in the Army and drank like a fish (well you do when you wear khaki)

I have found the pressure that I am subjected to over my choice not to drink is incredible, work colleagues, clients, even my family (not immediate) seem to think it is their mission on earth to "convert me" away from this abnormal abstinence.

Just over 10 years for me. I stopped the summer of 96. I have never had any pressure to drink but the cost of non-alcoholic drinks in pubs pisses me off.

I found it much easier to give up altogether than try and stick to "just a couple"

I find I can have a great time, even when I am surrounded by drunks, the only thing is I can remember what happend the night before....

When I am with my hard drinking Motorcycle buddies in the US they assumed I don't drink because I am a reformed alcaholic (seems to be only reason they understand not to drink!)..."one day at a time bro". I kinda get respect for it, even thought its not deserved. ...

I made a conscious decision to cut down on my alcohol consumption when I reached 50. Up to then I was very enthusiastic about the lunchtime sessions at work - any day of the week could be declared a Friday by popular vote.

I used to think that riding/training on a bike would counter the effects, but it seemed that my weight would go up despite the attempts to "ride it off". The piece in CW confirms that alcohol does effect the metabolism and the efficiency of the fat burning process.

I am by no means TT but do try and limit things to the occasions that deserve it and an amount that I consider reasonable.
