Its an excercise in keeping the 'somethingmustbedone' bregade quiet, that's all. Make 'em FEEL like they're making a difference, give 'em that nice warm glow of self importance and then completely ignore them.

I'm trembling in fear now, after reading this...
"The driver will then be sent a warning letter asking them not to drive fast through the village"...

I'd reply asking them to do something about crap driving standards...

They started a 'Speed Watch' scheme in Lyndhurst, (a village I travel through twice a day). I can't remember the details but I think it collapsed very quickely - perhaps the volunteers just got bored, and the equipment was handed back.

Now, they occasionally have a VAS system operating, which has more effect on driver's speed than anything else.

I have opted out of receiving unsolicited post, so any 'Community Speed Watch' correspondance I receive will be reported as such.

Quote:
If the same driver is caught twice, he or she will be sent a second letter warning they could be targeted by the road police team.

I should bloody well hope not! Feuding neighbors, one of whom is a Speed Watch busibody, how do you think that'll play out? The police 'targetting' individuals based on the uncorroborated say-so of a self-professed village tattletale!? What are they going to do, follow round anyone who has received two letters until they commit a crime? I have a feeling there is a human rights issue in there somewhere :scratchchin:

this looks like one of those situations where the slogan "speed kills" will be applied. one day an irate driver with a couple of minutes to spare will destroy the evidence (the camera) and then set about making a wife a widow.

They had one in a village not far from me. I think they're a GOOD thing. After a few weeks, the villagers operating it realised that (despite having complained about "outsiders" speeding through their village) they actually caught their own friends and neighbours for the most part.

...it soon fizzled out!

It would be interesting to get some data on how long these things last on average. Is this something that could be teased out via an FoI request, maybe?

I wouldn't mind betting they all fold well within a year - but it would be interesting to know.
