Some of the answers are truly frightening. I'm astounded.

We're now judging people's intoxication by whether they can stand on one foot? What about those of us who have difficulty balancing, and equally professional gymnasts and the like who will no doubt be able to stand on one foot perfectly well when far more intoxicated than your 'average' person!?

And being arrested for having a knife in the car - what if you were on the way to go fishing? Bah. Madness.

Apparently failing the intoxication tests would just be grounds to request a blood sample. I am fairly sure that only substances being detected in the blood test would be evidence for prosecution - to the same stadnard alcohol testing.

I did read that in the US it is regarded that how you behave during the test, not really how you perform that is most useful to the officers. The only thing that would scare me is being asked to read the alphabet backwards!

Frankly it can't come soon enough. There are people out there driving daily while under the influence of legal and illegal drugs and they only do so because they know that people are virtually never caught.

I used to teach First Aid and my immediate boss volunteered to be the patient for the physical examination, which included reflex testing.
I couldn't elicit a knee reflex with the patella hammer.
He conviniently forgot to tell me that the cerebral accident he'd had when scuba diving had buggered them all up.
His balance was shot to hell and back as well, wouldn't he be fun for the police to test.
