No sooner had I won my speeding case against the :bib: in Magistrates' court when I got flashed in France two weeks ago! It was on an Autoroute where the speed limit is normally 130km/h. I might have been just over that, but certainly not more than 140km/h. But - I think the limit might have been reduced to 110 at that point. There was no danger, but I got flashed anyway.

The cameras there are quite unlike the ones here. There will be a sign, advising drivers of the cameras which have been deployed "pour votre sécurité" - for your safety. Oh yes, I could feel the warm fuzziness of safety wash over me as I passed these cameras, knowing that they were protecting me from myself. :twisted: The cameras would always come within 1-2km of passing the sign, and could be either left or right. They face oncoming traffic, so when the flash goes off, it's right in your face.

I was in the left lane in my own (UK registered) car coming up alongside another car in the right lane, and the camera was on the right. I think there's a good chance that the other car would have blocked my numberplate. But assuming this is not the case, will the French authorities be able to get my details from DVLA? I would feel a bit miffed if they could, as not even UK citizens have access to information of that sort. What are the chances of a fine/points?

In truth - NIL, at the moment.

There's talk of information exchange going on. Bills are in the offing or have been passed. Still a bureaucratic nightmare for them though, plus the French don't do points for camera offences (probably because they already know a process of establishing who should get them would breach Euro Human Rights law).

I wouldn't worry too much.

That's not correct - the French do issue points (just like we do, except they're more severe)

Here's the rules (taken from http://english.controleradar.org/speeding-fines.php)

Speeding by less than 20 km/h (12 mph)

* Fine (0) : 68 euros
* License points loss : 1 point
* License suspension : none

if however the speed limit is lower than 50 km/h (31 mph)

* Fine (1) : 135 euros
* License points loss : 1 point
* License suspension : none

Speeding between 20 km/h and 30 km/h (12 mph to 19 mph)

* Fine (1) : 135 euros
* License points loss: 2 points
* License suspension (2) : none

Speeding between 30 km/h and 40 km/h (19 mph to 25 mph)

* Fine (1) : 135 euros
* License points loss: 3 points
* License suspension (2) : 3 years

Speeding between 40 km/h and 50 km/h (25 mph to 31 mph)

* Fine (1) : 135 euros
* License points loss: 4 points
* License suspension (2) : 3 years

Speeding by more than 50 km/h (31 mph)

* Fine (2) : 1500 euros
* License points loss: 6 points
* License suspension (2) : 3 years

Second offence speeding by more than 50 km/h (31 mph)

* Jail (2) : 3 months
* Fine (2) : 3750 euros
* License points loss: 6 points
* License suspension (2) : 3 years

(0) The fine is 68 euros, however if paid in less than 15 days it is 45 euros, and if paid in more than 45 days it is 180 euros. The maximum possible being 450 euros (if it goes into trial).
(1) The fine is 135 euros, however if paid in less than 15 days it is 90 euros, and if paid in more than 45 days it is 375 euros. The maximum possible being 750 euros (if it goes into trial).
(2) maximum.

I checked your link, and near the top of the page it says
Quote:
- You are caught speeding by a speed camera but not arrested with a foreign registered car. You are not likely to ever have to pay the fine, except if you are from Luxembourg.

As I'm not from Luxembourg, I hope to be in the clear!

Und from Switzerland :yikes: But we fine nowty French und no one else unless they pinged by an "on the spot" und foreigners pay lowest fixed fine whereas Swiss pay based on earnings :roll:

The system work in way as I think JT once suggested in early days of this site

A clean French driving licence ist issued with :yikes: t-twel-vve points. They deduct the points according to the offence und when you have none left .. you get a ban like here.

Dependent on nature of the offence - this decide whether a licence get suspended und you could say that also similar to here too. The suspension ist possible but not normally imposed unless driver was BOF! MERDE ALORS! :banghead: a right "vegetable of a driver" (loosely translated :hehe:
