Here come the police . . . at 25mphBy Nigel Bunyan

British police may soon be patrolling the streets on three-wheel electric scooters.

The T3 personal mobility vehicle is designed to allow officers to cover a greater area during patrols and give more members of the public a reassuring police presence.

Unveiled in Britain for the first time at the Association of Chief Police Officers' annual conference in Manchester, the T3 has a top speed of 25mph and a range of more than 20 miles.

Noel Cherowbrier, the managing director of T3 Motion, said several forces had already said they want to test the vehicle on the streets.

"It certainly has the wow factor, so people do remember it," he said.

"More people will get to see a police officer on his or her patrol because the vehicle has a range of 25 to 30 miles on one charge."

The T3 has a police siren and red and blue flashing lights. The European version will cost £4,500, but running costs will be about 20p a day.

PC Colin Chamberlain, of Greater Manchester Police, who tried the T3 yesterday, said: "It's great. I have a vintage Vespa scooter at home and the controls are very similar and easy to use.

"It would be excellent to use in the city centre. It's nice and smooth and pretty nippy."

Mr Cherowbrier said more than 600 T3s are already being used by police forces in the United States, including Los Angeles, Dallas and Miami, where they are typically used to patrol shopping centres and airports.

The vehicle can turn on the spot and mount kerbs and other obstacles, although it is not designed for use off-road, he added.

A giant Hummer vehicle was also on show at the conference after being loaned to Greater Manchester Police for an exhibition. Mike Todd, the force's chief constable, said he had no plans to add any of the gas-guzzling sports utility vehicles to his fleet.

I hope they're taxed

Bit like Daleks really. I don't suppose it will take the "yoofs" long to realise they just need to find a flight of staris to escape the "long arm of the law"!

I bet there's already a prize out for the first kid to nick one!

Do they do a GT version with upgraded brakes, sports suspension, alloys etc. etc.?
And surely it should have full battenburg livery?

Also not legal for use on the pavement.

They will need to be registered and insured and be used only on the road.

Bit like a Segway really

:gatso2: :hello: Erm, shouldn't the officer pictured be wearing a crash helmet, even at a speed of 25mph? :stop:

I've just had a look again... and i think if he crouched down, he might get 25.5 mph out of it - especially if he put a couple of extra pounds of pressure in the tyres!

On a different tack............(bear with me here)

It seems to me that there is a certain "Victorian" attitude in that the "Officer" MUST stand up rather than sit!........

Surely (shirley) a lower position would increase the speed of the device and aid the endurance of the individual? Or is this view too "left wing" for the comfort of the: ..................... "Washed"

Nah! It's so he can use a lasso or a harpoon

Or perhaps :scratchchin: - it's designed to cop Granny and Grampa in their mobility scooters!

(Personally I think a bicycle or a  motrobike  (or our nice cars :hehe: ) are the way to cop right villains!)

I've seen police on vehicles similar to that, in Spain.

I saw a "security" person on a segway in the Florida Mall yesterday. Complete with cycle helmet. I thought that was pretty funny.

Look at how small the front wheel is  A kerb or a typical UK sized pothole will send the rider flying - literally, especially at 25mph!

Nice quote from JC in his Sun column "Stannah stairlift with wheels ".
On a more serious note - do we still have Police Officers (genuine warranted Police Constables) ,or have they disapeared in the rash of PC (or should that be anti PC)lunacy ??

This country's going soft. :o

Electric scooters for police?

Max speed 25 mph, range 25 mph and costs £4,500!

Why not give them bikes, less than £1,000 assuming decent kit, range only limited by the number of donuts to be eaten, max speed - 40 + mph assuming a favourable hill. 8-)
