From the Daily Mail today. Sorry I had to split the article to fit my scanner.

Typical council cock-up, and even after the police had advised them to call it off, they still refused. Must have been some really irate drivers.

Elsewhere I've made a post about individual arrogance on the part of one driver.

This is corporate arrogance on a grandiose scale, ignoring police advice and carrying on regardless. These clowns clearly decided to just carry on regardless and the lesson they can learn from it - to turn the officials own words around - is to listen to a bit of advice now and again.

It would be interesting to know if accidents and speeding convictions went up on that day.

People could have DIED in that!

Class action anyone?

ISTM that causing a "Willful and avoidable" obstruction under these sort of extream conditions might well be actionable

I'm surprised the police don't have the power to move on a group of people blocking the roads for no good reason.

One hopes that the survey's results filter back to the car manufacturers with the message, "Stop being so tight-arsed and make air-con standard on all cars!!!".

More likely a chance for some care salespersons ( look -PC me ) to try to sell more air con "and sir , you might just get stuck in a council survey q, and need it"--"shal i put it on the order".

Government advice was to stay out of the sun, park in a shady area. I understand Essex did hand out leaflets to this effect.

Common sense should have applied.

However, in high viz vests in that weather - they would have been just as uncomfortable.

I hope the council did supply gallons of Sun Block Factor 50 as well as if those workers develop something nasty from being exposed to the sun all day - they could be in a bit of trouble later on.

The thing is, these lessons won't be learnt by other councils, and in a few years the people involved will have been rotated onto other work and some more numpties will do the same thing. Here's a similar thread from 2004 on PistonHeads about a Windsor census causing chaos:

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topi ... 9&f=10&h=0

Now I understand the idea of a traffic census and that a certain amount of disruption will be caused but I do wonder how statistically valid the results are if they begin to cause queues. For instance those who know the routes will use minor roads to avoid the traffic, and those left will be people who don't usually drive that way.

Surely it would be better to let the traffic flow freely and pull a random number of drivers? If they need more samples then run it in subsequent days/weeks.

Another thing I read - most people seem to think that it is mandatory to answer the census, and it seems that the census takers don't inform the drivers of this. I am pretty sure that given they delay, if they were told this they would have driven straight off!

Gareth

I wonder how many people gave them erroneous information when they got to the front of the queue out of spite?

I know I would've done!

They had something like this in Derby about 18 months ago at rush hour in the morning. I was nealy an hour late for work. By the time I got to the sensus point the police had instructed the operators to call it off....so a complete waste of time.

Local Authority Gauliter; "What is the purpose of your journey"

Driver: "Well, since it was going to be hottest day on record I thought it would be a great idea to put me and my family in the car so we could queue for three hours in the styifleing heat for the privalage of being interogated by some microcephalous dickwad fuck$hit about why we were all hot and sweaty and ill temperd!.... and trying to rip his head off and stuff it up his ass!!"
